Cnc Programming Manager information

What is a CNC programming manager?

A CNC Programming Manager is a professional responsible for overseeing the programming and operation of Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines in a manufacturing setting. They lead a team of CNC programmers and machinists, ensuring that all machine programs are optimized for efficiency, safety, and quality. Their duties often include managing workflow, troubleshooting technical issues, developing process improvements, and coordinating with other departments. A strong technical background in CNC machining, leadership skills, and experience with CAD/CAM software are typically required for this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a CNC programming manager?

To thrive as a CNC Programming Manager, you need advanced knowledge of CNC machining, programming (often in G-code), manufacturing processes, and typically a background in engineering or a related technical field. Familiarity with CAD/CAM software like Mastercam or SolidWorks, ERP systems, and experience with quality control certifications such as Six Sigma are commonly required. Strong leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills are essential for managing teams and optimizing workflows. These skills ensure efficient production, high-quality output, and effective management of both people and processes in a manufacturing environment.

What are some common challenges a CNC programming manager faces when overseeing a team of programmers?

A CNC Programming Manager often navigates challenges such as ensuring consistency and accuracy in programming across different team members, managing tight production deadlines, and keeping up with rapidly evolving CNC technologies. Balancing the workload among programmers and facilitating effective communication with machinists, engineers, and production staff are also key aspects of the role. Additionally, the manager is responsible for ongoing training and development to maintain high standards and optimize machine utilization, all while troubleshooting programming or machining issues that arise during production.

What is the difference between Cnc Programming Manager vs Cnc Programmer?

AspectCnc Programming ManagerCnc Programmer
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in manufacturing, engineering, or related field; certifications like NIMS or CAM certifications are commonOften requires similar technical certifications or training in CNC programming and machine operation
Work EnvironmentOversees multiple projects, manages teams, and collaborates with engineering and production departmentsFocuses on writing, testing, and optimizing CNC programs for specific machines and parts
Industry UsageUsed across manufacturing, aerospace, automotive, and industrial sectorsPrimarily found in manufacturing and machine shop environments

The main difference is that the Cnc Programming Manager oversees the programming team and strategic planning, while the Cnc Programmer focuses on creating and testing CNC programs for specific tasks. Both roles require technical skills, but the manager has additional responsibilities in leadership and project coordination.

Job description

Voyager is an innovative space, defense, and national security technology company committed to advancing and delivering transformative, mission-critical solutions. We tackle the most complex challenges to unlock new frontiers for human progress, fortify national security, and protect critical assets to lead in the race for technological and operational superiority from ground to space. Forge the Future: Join Voyager Technologies The future belongs to those who build it. At Voyager Technologies, we're building technologies that protect lives, expand frontiers and prepare us for what's next. And we're doing that with people who are wired to solve, build, adapt and lead. These roles are not for the faint of heart. You'll help lay the foundation for humanity's future. Join a culture where innovation thrives, curiosity is rewarded, and impact is real. We're a company of doers, thinkers and builders, united by purpose and grounded in reality. If you want to put your skills to work where the stakes are real and the mission is bigger than any one person, forge the future with Voyager. The Senior CNC Programmer will be located onsite in Penrose, CO with a transition to Pueblo, CO and reports to the Machining and Fabrication Manager. This role is responsible for programming, setting up, and operating advanced multi-axis CNC equipment - including 5-axis mills and live-tooling lathes - to produce high-precision components in aerospace-grade materials such as Inconel, Titanium, and Stainless Steel, while driving Voyager Energetics' transition to a new, automation-capable production facility. In this role, the essential functions are: * Create highly efficient SolidWorks CAM programs for complex 5-axis mill and mill-turn operations, including structured text development, toolpath optimization, full machine model verification, collision detection, and cycle time analysis. * Design and model fixtures, work holding, and production tooling in SolidWorks to support precision part production across steel, aluminum, stainless steel, Inconel, and titanium. * Program, set up, and operate live-tooling lathes with Y-axis capability, executing advanced turning strategies and validating probe routines and multi-axis synchronization prior to production. * Execute true 5-axis strategies (Unified toolpaths, Blade, Flow) with gouge checking, dynamic material removal simulation, and toolpath optimization to achieve tight tolerances on exotic alloys. * Develop complete manufacturing processes from drawing to finished high-precision part, troubleshooting and refining programs to ensure first-part success. * Build and maintain machine models, create custom control files, and simulate complex multi-axis setups to ensure safety and accuracy before any code reaches the shop floor. * Support the transition to a new aerospace-capable facility, contributing expertise in automation and lights-out manufacturing as capabilities expand. If your experience aligns with our basic qualifications and you are inspired by our mission, we'd like to connect. If you don't see the right role right now, Join Our Talent Community and stay connected as we continue to build what's next. Basic Qualifications * High School Diploma or equivalent with 5 years of experience in CNC machining and programming OR Associate's degree in Machining Technology or related field with 3 years of experience OR 8 years of hands-on CNC machining and programming experience in lieu of a formal degree. * Expert-level proficiency in SolidWorks CAM, including 5-axis milling, mill-turn operations, machine model building, and custom control file development. * Demonstrated experience machining exotic alloys including Inconel, Titanium, and Stainless Steel to tight tolerances. * Hands-on experience with live-tooling lathes with Y-axis capability and proven ability to program, set up, and operate multi-axis turning centers. * Strong self-starter with the ability to solve complex machining problems from first principles with minimal supervision, both independently and as a contributing team member in a fast-paced startup environment. * Eligible to pass an FBI/DoD background check and obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance. Preferred Qualifications * Experience in aerospace or defense manufacturing environments, including familiarity with ITAR requirements. * Familiarity with automation and lights-out manufacturing systems. Travel, Physical and Government Mandated Requirements * Minimal travel expected; primarily an onsite role in Penrose/Pueblo, CO. * Ability to stand, walk, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl for extended periods in an outdoor industrial environment * Candidates must meet all eligibility requirements to obtain and maintain applicable state and federal explosives licenses, including minimum age requirements (21 and over), a drug-free workplace in compliance with the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988 (41 U.S.C. ยงยง 8101-8106), Executive Order 12564 (Drug-Free Federal Workplace), applicable Department of Defense directives including DoD Instruction 1010.09 and DFARS 252.226-7003 and successful completion of any legally required background investigations. * To conform to U.S. Government export regulations, including the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) (22 CFR Parts 120-130) and the Export Administration Regulations (EAR) (15 CFR Parts 730-774), applicants for this position must be a U.S. Person: a US Citizen, a lawful permanent resident of the U.S., or a protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. ยง 1324b(a)(3).
