Job Description

Lead (Machine Shop)

The Lead (Machining Operations) is responsible for supporting daily machine shop operations by leading production activities, coordinating workflow, training Operators, and ensuring safe, efficient, and high-quality manufacturing performance. This position serves as a hands-on working leader within the machine shop and is responsible for supporting Operators, monitoring machining processes, troubleshooting production issues, and maintaining production flow to meet operational goals and customer requirements.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead daily machine shop operations to support production schedules, efficiency targets, and operational goals.
  • Delegate assignments and direct Operators in the execution of daily production responsibilities and priorities.
  • Train, coach, and mentor Operators on machining practices, setup procedures, inspection methods, safety expectations, and standardized work instructions.
  • Ensure adherence to all company safety procedures, quality standards, housekeeping requirements, and operational policies.
  • Monitor machine performance, tooling conditions, and operational efficiency to identify issues affecting production or quality.
  • Coordinate with maintenance personnel to support preventative maintenance activities and reduce equipment downtime.
  • Use precision measuring tools including micrometers, calipers, indicators, and gauges to verify dimensional accuracy and product quality.
  • Train and monitor employees on the use of setup sheets, inspection methods, work instructions, and quality procedures to ensure consistent production output.
  • Assist with setup activities on CNC turning centers as required and train employees to support setup operations.
  • Troubleshoot machining issues involving tooling, machine operation, dimensional variation, or process instability to achieve desired production results and minimize recurring issues.
  • Collaborate with engineering, quality, maintenance, and operations teams to resolve production concerns and improve manufacturing performance.
  • Support employee development through hands-on instruction, real-time problem solving, accountability, and clear communication.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and safe work areas in accordance with company expectations and operational standards.
  • Accurately complete production reports, operational records, and shift communication documentation as required.
