How much do cnc mechanical engineering jobs pay per hour?

As of Jul 28, 2026, the average hourly pay for cnc mechanical engineering in the United States is $37.66, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $33.89 and $40.14 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

Can you make $200,000 a year as a mechanical engineer?

Mechanical engineers, including those working in CNC and manufacturing, typically earn salaries below $200,000 annually, with top earners in specialized roles or management positions reaching higher salaries. Achieving this level often requires extensive experience, advanced skills, certifications, or leadership responsibilities in high-demand industries. Most mechanical engineers earn between $60,000 and $120,000 per year depending on location and expertise.

What are the typical challenges CNC Mechanical Engineers face when working with new materials or complex designs?

CNC Mechanical Engineers often encounter challenges when programming machines to work with new materials or intricate geometries, such as optimizing cutting parameters to prevent tool wear or material deformation. Adapting to rapidly evolving technology and integrating new software or machinery into existing workflows can also be demanding. Collaboration with design engineers and machinists is crucial to troubleshoot issues, ensure manufacturability, and maintain high quality standards. Continuous learning and problem-solving are key aspects of this role, especially in fast-paced manufacturing environments.

What engineers make $500,000?

Highly experienced mechanical engineers, including those specializing in CNC machinery or working in senior engineering roles, can earn salaries approaching or exceeding $500,000 annually, especially with bonuses, profit sharing, or working in high-demand industries. Achieving this level typically requires advanced skills, extensive experience, and often leadership responsibilities or specialized certifications.

How much money does a CNC engineer make?

A CNC mechanical engineer's salary typically ranges from $50,000 to $80,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and industry. Skilled engineers with certifications and proficiency in CAD/CAM software can earn higher wages, especially in manufacturing environments with advanced machinery.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a CNC Mechanical Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a CNC Mechanical Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical engineering principles, CAD/CAM design, and CNC machine operation, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree or technical certification. Familiarity with CNC programming languages (such as G-code), and experience with software like SolidWorks or AutoCAD, along with knowledge of manufacturing processes, are essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you excel in troubleshooting and team collaboration. These competencies ensure efficient production, high-quality outputs, and continuous improvement in precision manufacturing environments.

Do mechanical engineers use CNC?

Mechanical engineers often work with CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machines to design, analyze, and optimize manufacturing processes. While they may not operate CNC machines daily, they frequently collaborate with machinists and use CAD/CAM software to develop and improve CNC programs and tooling. Knowledge of CNC technology is valuable for mechanical engineers involved in manufacturing and product development.

What is the difference between Cnc Mechanical Engineering vs Cnc Machinist?

AspectCnc Mechanical EngineeringCnc Machinist
CredentialsEngineering degree, certifications in CAD/CAMTechnical diploma or certification, on-the-job training
Work EnvironmentDesign, analysis, project planning in offices or labsOperating CNC machines in manufacturing facilities
Employer & IndustryEngineering firms, manufacturing companies, R&DMachine shops, production plants, manufacturing industries

While Cnc Mechanical Engineers focus on designing and analyzing CNC machinery and systems, Cnc Machinists operate and program CNC machines to produce parts. Both roles require technical skills, but engineers are more involved in planning and development, whereas machinists handle the day-to-day machine operation.

What is CNC mechanical engineering?

CNC mechanical engineering involves designing, operating, and maintaining computer numerical control (CNC) machines used in manufacturing. This field combines principles of mechanical engineering with advanced automation to produce precision parts and components. CNC mechanical engineers create technical drawings, program machines, and troubleshoot issues to ensure efficiency and quality in production. They often work with materials like metal, plastic, or composites in industries such as automotive, aerospace, and industrial equipment manufacturing.
