What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a CNC Mechanical Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a CNC Mechanical Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical engineering principles, CAD/CAM design, and CNC machine operation, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree or technical certification. Familiarity with CNC programming languages (such as G-code), and experience with software like SolidWorks or AutoCAD, along with knowledge of manufacturing processes, are essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you excel in troubleshooting and team collaboration. These competencies ensure efficient production, high-quality outputs, and continuous improvement in precision manufacturing environments.

What are the typical challenges CNC Mechanical Engineers face when working with new materials or complex designs?

CNC Mechanical Engineers often encounter challenges when programming machines to work with new materials or intricate geometries, such as optimizing cutting parameters to prevent tool wear or material deformation. Adapting to rapidly evolving technology and integrating new software or machinery into existing workflows can also be demanding. Collaboration with design engineers and machinists is crucial to troubleshoot issues, ensure manufacturability, and maintain high quality standards. Continuous learning and problem-solving are key aspects of this role, especially in fast-paced manufacturing environments.

What is CNC mechanical engineering?

CNC mechanical engineering involves designing, operating, and maintaining computer numerical control (CNC) machines used in manufacturing. This field combines principles of mechanical engineering with advanced automation to produce precision parts and components. CNC mechanical engineers create technical drawings, program machines, and troubleshoot issues to ensure efficiency and quality in production. They often work with materials like metal, plastic, or composites in industries such as automotive, aerospace, and industrial equipment manufacturing.

What is the difference between Cnc Mechanical Engineering vs Cnc Machinist?

AspectCnc Mechanical EngineeringCnc Machinist
CredentialsEngineering degree, certifications in CAD/CAMTechnical diploma or certification, on-the-job training
Work EnvironmentDesign, analysis, project planning in offices or labsOperating CNC machines in manufacturing facilities
Employer & IndustryEngineering firms, manufacturing companies, R&DMachine shops, production plants, manufacturing industries

While Cnc Mechanical Engineers focus on designing and analyzing CNC machinery and systems, Cnc Machinists operate and program CNC machines to produce parts. Both roles require technical skills, but engineers are more involved in planning and development, whereas machinists handle the day-to-day machine operation.

Department: Design Engineering
Employment Type: Full-Time

Build the Machines That Build the Future
At C.R. Onsrud, we don’t build ordinary machines—we engineer high-performance industrial CNC machinery used by manufacturers across industries to create innovative products with precision and speed.
For over 100 years, the Onsrud family has pushed engineering boundaries through innovation, craftsmanship, and advanced manufacturing. Today, we continue that legacy from our state-of-the-art facility in Troutman, NC, designing and manufacturing world-class CNC machinery and capital equipment.
If you’re passionate about mechanical design, advanced machinery, and solving complex engineering challenges, this is an opportunity to work on meaningful, high-impact equipment in a collaborative, engineering-driven environment.
Why Engineers Choose C.R. Onsrud:

  • Design complex, custom-built industrial CNC machinery
  • Work on highly engineered capital equipment—not repetitive commodity products
  • Collaborative, ego-free engineering culture
  • Modern, clean, climate-controlled manufacturing facility
  • Long-term career growth and stability
  • Diverse engineering challenges involving mechanical systems, fabrication, automation, and controls
  • Opportunity to work closely with manufacturing, customers, sales, and leadership
  • Your Impact

As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you will drive the development of sophisticated capital equipment by translating customer requirements into precision-engineered designs, 3D models, and manufacturing documentation.
You’ll work on highly technical mechanical systems involving motion control, industrial components, fabricated structures, and machine assemblies while helping bridge the gap between concept, engineering theory, and real-world manufacturing execution.
Your work will directly impact machine performance, reliability, manufacturability, and customer success.

What You’ll Do:

Mechanical Design & Engineering

  • Design complex capital equipment and fabricated metal products
  • Develop mechanisms involving motors, controls, clutches, brakes, gearing, and industrial automation systems
  • Create detailed 3D models, assemblies, and technical drawings using Autodesk Inventor
  • Produce exploded views, machine manuals, and technical documentation

Electrical & Controls Support

  • Design electrical prints and wiring diagrams for 3-phase and 24V systems to ANSI standards
  • Support integration of controls and industrial electrical systems into machine designs

Product Development & Collaboration

  • Work closely with customers, sales, and marketing to define product requirements
  • Support turnkey machine development from concept through production
