Job Description

Join a growing Building & Construction team as a CMT Field Technician II focused on soils and concrete testing. In this role, you perform field and on-site testing, project-specific observations, and site assessments to support major civil and commercial construction projects. You operate testing equipment, interpret drawings and specifications, and provide accurate, timely reports that help ensure the safety, quality, and performance of new developments and existing facilities.

Responsibilities

  • Perform a variety of construction materials testing, project-specific observations, and site assessment duties for soils and concrete on active construction sites.
  • Operate field testing equipment and conduct soil and concrete tests, including sampling, compaction testing, and concrete testing as required by project specifications.
  • Collect, document, and assess test data, preparing clear and detailed field and laboratory reports for project teams.
  • Review and work from drawings, specifications, and diagrams to understand project requirements and ensure that all testing and inspection tasks are completed according to schedule.
  • Coordinate daily with the General Contractor to understand the scope of work, scheduled activities (such as concrete pours), and required testing for the day.
  • Arrive at job sites at the designated day-shift start time, confirm the day’s plan with the General Contractor, and organize testing activities accordingly.
  • Set up and perform testing during scheduled activities, such as concrete pours, soil sampling, and compaction testing, ensuring adherence to relevant standards and project requirements.
  • Communicate effectively with site personnel, project managers, and internal team members regarding test results, site conditions, and any observed issues.
  • Check in with the General Contractor at the end of each day to confirm completion of tasks and address any remaining testing needs before leaving the site.
  • Report back to the internal CMT team lead at the end of the day to confirm work completion, submit documentation, and receive assignments for upcoming work.
  • Support a variety of small and large projects, including commercial, industrial, institutional, and infrastructure developments, by providing reliable field testing and inspection services.
  • Follow safety protocols and use appropriate personal protective equipment while working on construction sites in compliance with OSHA requirements.
  • Maintain testing equipment in good working order, ensuring proper calibration, cleanliness, and readiness for daily field use.
  • Apply basic math and computer skills to calculate results, complete forms, enter data, and prepare reports accurately and on time.

Essential Skills

  • At least 3+ years of Construction Materials Testing (CMT) experience.
  • ACI Concrete certification (mandatory).
  • Demonstrated soil sampling experience; ICC Soil Certification heavily preferred but not required.
  • OSHA 10 certification is a plus
  • OSHA 30 certification required for those serving as Lead Inspector.
  • Effective communication skills, including clear written, verbal, and active listening abilities.
  • Solid interpersonal skills to work collaboratively with General Contractors, project teams, and internal colleagues.
  • Basic math skills and proficiency using a calculator for field calculations.
  • Basic computer skills for data entry, email communication, and report preparation.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • 5+ years of soils inspection experience required if you do not hold an ICC Soils Special Inspector Certification.
  • Understanding of geotechnical engineering principles as they relate to soil behavior, foundations, and earthwork.
  • Understanding of civil engineering principles relevant to construction materials, site work, and structural support.
  • Experience with construction materials testing, including soil analysis, soil boring, soil compaction, and concrete testing.
  • Experience interpreting and applying project specifications, building codes, and testing standards in the field.
  • Familiarity with certifications and standards such as NICET and ICC related to soils and concrete testing (preferred).

Work Environment

You join a Building & Construction team that provides assurance, testing, inspection, certification, and building science services to the architectural, engineering, and construction industry. The team supports a wide range of projects, from small local developments to large-scale, high-profile jobs such as data centers, industrial plants, warehouses, storage facilities, hotels, and institutional projects. You primarily work in the field on active construction sites during day shifts, starting your day by traveling from home or office to the job site and checking in with the General Contractor to review the schedule and testing needs. The role involves frequent on-site presence, use of field testing equipment for soils and concrete, and regular interaction with project teams.
