What is a clinical resource nurse?

A Clinical Resource Nurse (CRN) is an experienced registered nurse who provides guidance, education, and support to nursing staff to ensure high-quality patient care. They serve as a resource for best practices, policy implementation, and clinical problem-solving within their healthcare unit. CRNs often assist with staff training, mentoring new nurses, and improving workflow efficiency. Their role helps bridge the gap between frontline nursing staff and leadership, ensuring better patient outcomes and adherence to healthcare protocols.

What are the primary responsibilities of a clinical resource nurse?

A Clinical Resource Nurse typically serves as a clinical expert and resource for nursing staff, assisting with complex cases, troubleshooting care issues, and ensuring adherence to best practices. On a daily basis, they may provide hands-on support, conduct in-service education sessions, assist with patient assessments, and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to foster high-quality care. They are often involved in policy development, process improvements, and mentoring new staff. This multifaceted role is dynamic and highly valued in healthcare settings, as it helps bridge the gap between frontline nursing care and clinical leadership.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a clinical resource nurse?

Excelling as a Clinical Resource Nurse requires advanced clinical expertise, critical thinking, and a current RN license—often with additional certifications such as BLS, ACLS, or specialty credentials. Familiarity with hospital information systems, electronic health records, and evidence-based practice guidelines is essential. Strong leadership, effective communication, and the ability to mentor others are key soft skills for this role. These strengths enable Clinical Resource Nurses to support optimal patient care, guide nursing teams, and facilitate continuous quality improvement in clinical settings.

Job Overview

As part of the Clinical Resource (CR) Team, the Clinical Resource (CR) Nurse plans a key role in supporting bedside clinical teams in the delivery of family centered care. The actions of the Clinical Resource Nurse reflect professional nursing practice with a team approach and holds an expectation to promote and maintain quality patient care, manage nursing operations, assist in teaching nursing staff, enforce procedures, policies, practices, and standards of the facility. As an informal leader, the Clinical Resource Nurse builds and maintains relationships with multidisciplinary healthcare providers; collects, monitors, and reports on quality-of-care outcome measures; escalates safety concerns and works with leadership to resolve. The Clinical Resource Nurse serves as a clinical subject matter expert to team members on the Clinical Resource Team.

The Clinical Nurse Resource may begin their shift in one unit and based on a change in census and acuity be reallocated to a different unit to meet operational needs. However, it is also possible for the Clinical Nurse Resource to experience extended periods of time in one department to offset long-term absences through the Months Program.
