Job description

Our organization is in search of a dynamic and collaborative physician educator to oversee the Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program. In partnership with an Associate Program Director, a program manager, and dedicated faculty, the Program Director will enhance resident recruitment, promote educational excellence, and prepare future obstetricians and gynecologists.

This full-time role comprises 50% dedicated to program leadership and 50% focused on clinical practice, along with an academic appointment at a prestigious medical school, with the rank determined by the qualifications of the selected candidate.

The Program Director will be responsible for providing strategic, educational, and administrative guidance for the residency program, with a focus on:

  • Attracting a talented and diverse group of residents

  • Enhancing the quality and innovation of education

  • Transforming residents into skilled, compassionate, and practice-ready obstetricians and gynecologists

  • Encouraging faculty excellence in teaching, assessment, and mentorship

  • Bolstering the program's reputation both regionally and nationally

About the Program

The OB/GYN Residency at our organization is accredited by ACGME and is dedicated to developing outstanding clinicians, compassionate advocates for patients, critical thinkers, educators, and lifelong learners. The program is supported by a multidisciplinary educational leadership team, full-time faculty, and community physicians, with a total of 20 residents enrolled.

As Maine's primary tertiary referral center, our organization provides residents with extensive exposure to both routine and complex obstetric and gynecologic care across various settings, including inpatient, outpatient, surgical, and subspecialty environments.

Key Responsibilities of the Program Director:

  • Provide strategic and educational leadership

  • Oversee resident recruitment and selection

  • Ensure curriculum and educational excellence

  • Support resident assessment, advancement, and well-being

  • Conduct program evaluation and promote continuous improvement

  • Engage and develop faculty

  • Encourage scholarship, research, and quality improvement initiatives

  • Manage administrative tasks and ensure accreditation compliance

Clinical and Teaching Responsibilities:

  • Maintain an active clinical practice in obstetrics and gynecology or a related subspecialty

  • Deliver high-quality, evidence-based, and patient-centered care

  • Teach and supervise residents and medical students in clinical environments

  • Exemplify clinical excellence, professionalism, effective communication, teamwork, and sound clinical judgment

  • Participate in departmental call, service coverage, and other clinical duties as per the agreed 0.50 clinical FTE

  • Maintain clinical competence, credentials, and ongoing professional development

Required Qualifications:

  • MD or DO degree, or an equivalent medical qualification

  • Completion of an ACGME- or AOA-accredited residency in obstetrics and gynecology

  • Current certification by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology or the American Osteopathic Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, or qualifications acceptable to the ACGME Review Committee

  • Eligibility for an unrestricted medical license in Maine

  • Eligibility for medical staff privileges at our organization

  • A minimum of three years of documented educational or administrative experience, or qualifications acceptable to the ACGME Review Committee

  • Demonstrated ongoing clinical activity in obstetrics and gynecology

  • Experience in teaching and supervising residents or fellows

  • Proven commitment to professionalism, educational excellence, and high-quality patient care

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience as a residency program director, associate program director, assistant program director, clerkship director, or other significant educational leadership roles

  • Formal training or advanced professional development in medical education, leadership, quality improvement, or healthcare administration

  • Experience with competency-based assessment, ACGME Milestones, and Clinical Competency Committees

  • Proven success in resident recruitment and selection

  • Experience in developing or implementing innovative curricula

  • Record of scholarship in clinical medicine, medical education, research, or quality improvement

  • Experience mentoring residents and faculty

  • Academic achievements that support appointment at the associate professor or professor level

  • Understanding of the healthcare needs of rural and underserved communities

  • Experience leading change within a complex academic health system

The annual base salary for this position is set at $404,250.
