Job description

Department Overview

This position is designated as a Transgender Health Program (THP) Clinical Psychologist who will work collaboratively with the Department of Family Medicine Behavioral Health Team, Department of Psychiatry - Division of Psychology, as well as in conjunction with clinical providers across the clinical areas of the Division of Plastics & Reconstructive Surgery, the Department of Urology, the Department of Family Medicine, The Dept of Otolaryngology, the Department of Pediatrics - Endocrinology Division, and the Department of OB/GYN.

The THP's goals are to provide leadership in healthcare for the transgender community by ensuring that OHSU is an accessible, welcoming, and culturally responsive setting for patients, employees, and visitors. More specifically, the THP works in partnership with other stakeholders at OHSU and the greater Oregon community by addressing needs in program development, clinical alignment across disciplines, best practices in clinical service delivery, training/education for employees, coordination/navigation for patients, and community engagement.

Function/Duties of Position

In order to meet the mental health needs of both adolescent-young adult and adult patients this position will provide the following clinical services:

Adolescent-Young Adults:

  • Exploration of gender identity
  • Assess mental health conditions, possibly unrelated to gender identity
  • Establish/diagnose presence of gender dysphoria
  • Assess readiness for hormone therapy and/or surgical intervention
  • Collaborate with parents, family, and community supports

Adult:

  • Establish/diagnose presence of gender dysphoria Assess capacity to provide informed consent
  • Assess overall psychosocial functioning and support
  • Assess capacity for self-care
  • Assess health literacy and when needed in conjunction with THP social workers provide basic education about the surgical procedure, recovery, and management of expectations
  • Provide brief supportive psychotherapy for limited duration specifically at pre- and post-surgical periods.
  • Provide assessment and recommendation for minors eligible to pursue gender affirming surgery

Clinical assessments for adolescent-young adults (AYA) and adult patients may include the use of psychological assessment instruments to assess for readiness for treatment, surgery, and/or treatment planning. The need for these assessments that may include intelligence/cognitive assessment or personality inventory assessment will likely be an exception rather than the norm. When standard instruments are being used appropriate documentation and assessment reporting writing will be expected.

These tasks will occur in collaboration with the various surgeons, medical specialists, primary care providers, and THP staff including THP social workers, THP Clinical Program Manager, THP students/volunteers, and others as appropriate for the holistic care of the patient.

This position will be responsible for supervision of mental health professionals in training

This position will attend monthly meetings of both the Family Medicine Behavioral Health Team and THP Meetings.

Required Qualifications
  • Doctor of Psychology (PhD/PsyD)
  • 5 years of experience providing assessment, diagnoses and treatment for transgender, gender non-confirming or those diagnosed with gender dysphoria in a physical or mental health setting.

  • Experience assessing patients across the lifespan for readiness to proceed with the full scope of gender affirming care.

  • Experience with collaborative multi-disciplinary models of care with transgender and gender diverse patient populations.

  • Experience assessing and treating patients who have complex mental health concerns

  • Current Oregon and Washington licensure or license eligibility within 6 months 

Required Job Related Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Competencies):

  • Familiarity with WPATH (World Professional Association of Transgender Health) Standards of Care, 8th edition.

  • Strong working knowledge of physical and mental health care associated with gender affirming care

  • Knowledge of biopsychosocial issues affecting the transgender populations across the lifespan, including but not limited to substance abuse, poverty, health risks, transition impacts on families and schools, and legal issues.

  •  Verifiable strong verbal and written communication skills, problem solving skills

  • Able to traverse several campuses with or without accommodation. 
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working within the Portland area safety net.

  • Bilingual

  • Experiencing working in a hospital setting and/or in the health psychology field

  • Experience with teaching and/or training of students and colleagues

  • Experience with providing therapeutic interventions for diverse populations

  • Familiarity with gender affirming care offerings and requirements under the Oregon Medicaid and traditional Medicare plans
  • Certifications in evidence-based trauma treatments and/or dialectical behavioral therapy
