Job description

Outpatient Behavioral Health Mental Health Intern

The Outpatient Behavioral Health (OBH) Mental Health Intern will serve as a member of the Outpatient Behavioral Health (OBH) team. The Intern will practice, learn, and grow clinical skills and provide outpatient behavioral health treatment using evidence-based treatments with adults, children, and families under the supervision of a licensed clinical supervisor. The intern will perform initial behavioral health assessments, develop treatment plans, and deliver on-going care in accordance with the established treatment plan.

Essential Functions:

  • Works under the direct supervision of the OBH Intern Supervisor with support from OBH Services Supervisor and Vice President of Behavioral Health.
  • Utilizes clinical judgement in assessing patients' behavioral health condition(s) or immediate needs.
  • Applies high quality, appropriate evidence-based behavioral health treatment based on clinical diagnosis and assessment of the patient's presenting problem. Treatment modalities include, but are not limited to, individual, family, and group therapies at any of the Aviva Health sites.
  • Accurately documents all clinical interventions, diagnosis, symptoms, and presenting problems in the Electronic Medical Record and completes notes in a timely manner as required for OBH policy and procedures.
  • Works collaboratively with providers including, but not limited to, Physicians, Nurse Practitioners, Nurses, Specialists, Nutritionists, Mental Health counselors and therapists, Clinical Psychologist(s), Medical assistants, pharmacy, and psychiatry providers.
  • Participate in weekly review of newly referred patients with complete Behavioral Health Department, including the Primary Care Behavioral Health (PCBH) and OBH teams.
  • Works with patients to develop evidence-based treatment plans and measurable goals, based on their social, emotional, and health needs.
  • Incorporates health and wellness education and referrals to preventative care.
  • Coordinates care with patient's care team and communicates regularly with care team.
  • Participates in peer review process on a quarterly basis.
  • Complies with established organizational and departmental policies, procedures, and objectives.
  • Attends a variety of meetings, conferences, seminars as required or directed.
  • Demonstrates use of Quality Improvement in daily operations.
  • Complies with all health and safety regulations and requirements.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality and complies with HIPAA regulations.
  • Abided by ethical standards of practice outlined by the applicable licensure board associated with the intern's degree (i.e. MSW and Board of Licensed Social Workers, Clinical Mental Health Counseling and Board of Licensed Professional Counselors and Therapists).
  • Maintain appropriate professional boundaries.
  • Respects diverse views and approaches, and contributes to maintaining an environment of professionalism, respect, tolerance, civility, nonjudgement, and acceptance toward all employees, patients, and visitors.
  • Be consistent and prompt in attendance at the OBH office or assigned work site, and adhere to professional standards for dress, behavior, and conduct.
  • Record counseling sessions regularly with client consent to support supervision and evaluation. Follow program guidelines for ensuring the security of recordings and using them as a basis for supervision meetings.
  • Notify Aviva Health promptly of any changes to key aspects of the internship placement.
  • Performs other similar and related duties as required or directed.

Qualifications:

  • Applicants must be currently enrolled in their second year (or equivalent) in an accredited university, Master's degree program in social work, psychology, counseling, or marriage and family counseling.
  • Ability to provide clinical treatment to children, adults, elderly, and families in individual, family, group, and crisis intervention modalities.
  • Current, active Basic Life Saving certification. Certification training available upon hire.
  • Must be able to interact with a variety of individuals at various levels under potentially stressful circumstances while exercising sound judgement, tact, ethics, and diplomacy.
  • Capacity to develop clinical assessment, diagnostic, and intervention skills.
  • Must be mission driven and passionate about providing caring and compassionate, high-quality care to the underserved in a healthcare setting.
  • Basic knowledge of medical terminology preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of the current DSM and/or ICD codes.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain rapport with patients, clinic staff, and co-workers from diverse backgrounds.
  • Knowledge of HIPAA regulations and practices
  • Ability to work with people in a fast-paced environment with higher patient flow
  • Must be able to work independently while receiving supervision and support.
  • Capacity to learn how to use EMR, Microsoft Office products, and computers.
  • Communicate with clarity, both verbally and in writing, to groups and individuals.
  • Ability to work well as a part of a health care team.
