What are clinical ethicists?

Clinical ethicists are professionals who provide guidance on ethical issues that arise in healthcare settings. They help patients, families, and healthcare teams navigate complex moral dilemmas, such as end-of-life decisions, informed consent, and patient autonomy. Clinical ethicists may lead ethics consultations, develop hospital policies, and educate staff about ethical practices. Their work ensures that medical care aligns with ethical principles and legal standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Clinical Ethicist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Clinical Ethicist, you need a strong background in bioethics, philosophy, or health law, often supported by an advanced degree in a related field. Familiarity with hospital policies, case consultation frameworks, and relevant regulatory guidelines is essential. Outstanding communication, mediation, and analytical thinking are vital soft skills for facilitating complex ethical discussions among diverse stakeholders. These competencies ensure ethically sound decision-making and support patient-centered care in challenging clinical situations.

What are some common challenges a Clinical Ethicist faces when mediating ethical conflicts in healthcare settings?

Clinical Ethicists often navigate complex situations where patients, families, and healthcare teams may have differing values or opinions about treatment decisions. A key challenge is facilitating open, respectful dialogue to reach consensus while respecting diverse cultural, religious, and personal beliefs. Additionally, Clinical Ethicists must stay current with evolving laws and ethical guidelines while providing timely support, often under emotional and time-sensitive circumstances. Their role requires strong communication and mediation skills, as well as the ability to handle ethical ambiguity with professionalism and empathy.

Job description

About Baptist Health
Recognized as a top place to work in health care, Baptist Health cares for more patients in Northeast Florida than any other provider, ranking as "most preferred" for more than 30 years. We're Jacksonville's only locally governed, faith-based, not-for-profit health system and provide a full spectrum of preventive and specialty care through 200+ locations and six hospitals. Our centers of excellence include Baptist MD Anderson Cancer Center, Baptist Heart Hospital, Baptist Neurological Institute and Wolfson Children's Hospital.

Baptist Health is hiring a Sr. Clinical Ethicist to join the Bioethics Program at Baptist Health. This is a full-time opportunity located on the downtown Jacksonville campus of Baptist Health.

The Bioethics Program at Baptist Health System enjoys broad organizational support and is looking to hire a Senior Clinical Ethicist to join our well-established, collaborative, growing Team. Working closely with other members of the Ethics Program, the senior clinical ethicist will share responsibility for receiving requests and conducting ethics consultations independently, documenting consultations in a timely and thorough manner in the electronic health record, and following up with patient cases after referral. The senior clinical ethicist will need to be comfortable working in a clinical setting, engaging directly with care providers, professional staff, patients, and families. The Senior Clinical Ethicist will work closely with other members of the Ethics Program to deliver high quality ethics consultation services with compassion and respect as they help the multidisciplinary Team grapple with difficult ethical issues that permeate the clinical landscape. The clinical ethicists will be expected to participate in on call services on a rotating basis, which may include days, evenings, weekends, and holiday coverage for the entire health system. The senior clinical ethicist will participate in the continuous development and quality improvement of our busy ethics consultation services. Working alongside ethics program Team members, the clinical ethicist will help track ethics consultations, identify recurring issues and areas for quality improvement, and work to develop process improvement initiatives.

In addition to responding to requests for ethics consultations, the senior clinical ethicist will engage in preventative ethics activities, including but not limited to participating in monthly Bioethics Performance Improvement Case Conferences, rounding on units throughout the Health System, partnering with Ethics Liaisons and Ethics Program colleagues to provide moral distress debriefs across the Health System, and offering guidance on clinical and organizational ethics issues as identified across the Health System.

The senior clinical ethicist will deliver high-quality bioethics education throughout the health system. The Ethics program is responsible for developing and delivering bioethics education to medical residents, PA, ARNP, medical, and nursing students, in addition to multidisciplinary healthcare Team members across the Health System through both scheduled programs and as needed. Proactively, the clinical ethicists will identify opportunities for providing bioethics education on units across the health system in order to continue to enhance the existing offerings of the Ethics Program and meet the evolving needs of multidisciplinary Team members.

The senior clinical ethicist will engage in clinical ethics research and scholarship with colleagues and independently, contributing to the clinical ethics literature and presenting at local, regional, and national conferences. Working with colleagues within the Ethics Program and across the Health System, the Senior Clinical Ethicist will help to develop, review, and revise ethics-related policies. They will also work with multidisciplinary colleagues on Health System committees and working groups, lending expertise and insight on clinical and organizational ethical issues.
