A Brief Overview
Maintains clinical equipment through the effective use of the Medical Equipment Management Plan. Performs a variety of tasks associated with the installation, maintenance, calibration, and repair of biomedical equipment with minimal supervision. Provides comprehensive support of acuity equipment for direct patient care staff.
Essential Functions
    • Comprehensive knowledge level and experienced in most or all facets of job. Possesses an intermediate level of expertise and is capable of assisting less experienced technicians.
    • Installs, maintains, services, modifies, troubleshoots, and calibrates a variety of X-Ray units, Portable X-Ray units, Fluoroscopy Systems, CR, MRI & Dialysis units. To include diagnostic, therapeutic and life support devices by interpreting engineering and vendor information, schematic diagrams, and graphic illustrations.
    • Performs electrical safety tests on healthcare technology using specialized test equipment.
      • Exhibits a comprehensive understanding the use of devices supported with appropriate staff and equipment operators
      • Provides comprehensive support of acuity equipment for direct patient care staff
      • Demonstrates familiarity with the operations and environment that they support such as hospital, clinic, etc.
      • Maintains comprehensive experience in their assigned clinical environment.
      • Maintains a comprehensive understanding of both local and national public safety and regulatory issues.
      • Demonstrates the ability to solve service line customer service problems
      • Demonstrates a working knowledge of clinical equipment, radiological, laboratory and network medical systems.
      • Demonstrates a basic understanding of project management terms and methods.
    • Assists in the support of a systematic preventive maintenance program of healthcare technology.
    • Documents the introduction of new medical equipment and evaluates to ensure it meets documented hospital safety requirements. Obtains and inputs information necessary to maintain the Clinical Engineering database.
    • Diagnoses and corrects system and equipment malfunctions by making alterations, repairs and replacements to ensure that medical equipment and internal circuitry meet specified requirements; make necessary calculations for computing circuit elements necessary to adjust circuitry to specified requirements as instructed.
    • Documents repair and maintenance service activities including but not limited to detailed equipment repairs by equipment identification
    • Improves or makes special test setups to conduct functional checks of medical electronic test equipment.
    • Completes requisition for vendor service and repair/replacement parts.
    • Interacts with equipment users to identify reasons contributing to equipment malfunctions.
    • Monitors user errors as well as equipment and system failures and other problems in order to improve program quality.
    • Completes rounds and maintains shop space in a responsible manner.
    • Provides technical assistance and instruction to medical personnel in the operation and maintenance of equipment as directed.
    • Provides recommendations regarding purchase of biomedical instrumentation.
    • Provides recommendations to supervisor for equipment performance problems, need for replacement, etc.
    • May provide training and assistance to Biomedical Engineering Technicians as directed.
  • Regular attendance at work is an essential function of the job.

Education Qualifications
  • Associate's Degree or higher in Biomedical Technology, related technical field, or completion of a relevant military training program required, equivalent work experience may substitute for education. Required

Experience Qualifications
  • Minimum three years of experience as a Biomedical Engineering Technician or relevant field of service Preferred

Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of electronics and electricity including analog and intermediate digital electronics to test, calibrate, maintain, and repair biomedical equipment and moderately complex biomedical instrumentation systems.
  • Skill in the setup and use of standard and advanced level test equipment to perform precise and detailed analysis of the operating and design characteristics of equipment and initiate repairs, reconfiguration, or redesign of moderately complex medical systems.
  • Skill in applying theory, concepts, techniques, design characteristics, operation, and functions to assist and support installation, operation, test, maintenance, repair, design, and modification for a comprehensive range of imaging systems, dialysis and medical equipment connected to networks or other operating systems.
  • Ability to evaluate practical and technical information from manufacturers, contract specifications, manuals, and historical data in order to perform analysis required to make effective recommendations concerning operation, maintenance, and repair of medical equipment.
  • Ability to perform testing and troubleshooting of medical devices involving their interfaces and connections to other medical devices, clinical systems, or information systems either directly or through the hospitals hardwired and wireless networks.
  • Ability to use application software and hardware as it relates to the operation and diagnostics of medical equipment.
  • Knowledge of computer equipment with a wide variety of software to input and retrieve data as required, and to prepare a variety of specific working documents and forms such as spreadsheet, database, word processing, and other similar products.
  • Ability to comprehend and follow both written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with co-workers, and clinical and medical staff.
  • Ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays, if necessary.
  • Ability to accept rotating on-call assignment after a minimum of 120 days onboarding

Licenses and Certifications
  • CBET - Certified Biomedical Equipment Technician Preferred or
  • Certified Radiology Equipment Specialist (CRES) Preferred or
  • Certified Laboratory Equipment Specialist (CLES) Preferred or
  • Certified Healthcare Technology Manager (CHTM) is Preferred and
  • At least one Core Certification from CompTia Preferred
