Job description
Provides clinical expertise in patient care management and provides an appropriate teaching environment for fellows, residents, and students in the specialty of Rheumatology. The Assistant Professor must be fully ambulatory and have excellent bilateral manual dexterity, good hand-eye coordination, and visual and auditory acuity to perform the job functions. The Assistant Professor will be intelligent with outstanding analytical skills to make judgments regarding the patient's medical problems and advise the patient on methods to improve their care. Furthermore, the Assistant Professor must have emotional and psychological stability so that he or she will be able to manage patients and their families compassionately and positively.
The Assistant Professor will participate in developing clinical research studies and will be independently responsible for new patient evaluations, initiation of appropriate referrals, and follow-up as appropriate. Clinical procedures will encompass those pertinent to delivering standard care to the patient.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Education/Teaching
a) Provide a balanced and integrated educational program in internal medicine for medical residents and students who rotate through the Department of General Internal Medicine.
b) Attend and participate in Division/Department teaching and continuing education conferences, which require verbal interaction with colleagues and walking to meeting locations throughout the campus.
c) Provide talks to interdisciplinary teams, patients and caregivers across the institution and nationally on rheumatology topics.
2. Research
a) Actively engage in clinical research and scholarly activity to enhance the academic environment of the Department.
i. Develop programs of clinical research and scholarly activities in keeping with the goals of the Department. Requires the ability to synthesize a myriad of information pertaining to research. May necessitate (orally or in writing) instructing research support personnel in protocol implementation.
ii. Seek appropriate funding mechanisms to support clinical research. May require the completion of grant application forms through oral dictation or the use of a computer and keyboard. Also, will require budget development and analysis.
3. Clinical Practice
a) Represent the Department of General Internal Medicine at local, regional, state, and national levels regarding the field of Rheumatology. This will require traveling to sites outside of the Houston area and, upon return, disseminating the information obtained or learned by sharing with department colleagues verbally or in writing.
b) Practice clinical medicine in an exemplary manner in standards set forth by the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners, and the American College of Physicians, properly balanced with other academic activities.
i. Must be capable of providing complete and thorough history and physical patient examinations. Must be able to perform invasive procedures as dictated by the physician's specialty. This may require standing, bending, stooping, lifting, hearing, manual dexterity, and clear and concise verbal communication.
ii. Develop and maintain a clinical practice for patients referred to MD Anderson Cancer Center.
1. Provide physician staffing for the Department of General Internal Medicine at a level commensurate with that which would be provided by other Rheumatologists with the same level of training and experience.
2. Visually review for proper ICD-10 and CPT coding and approve all charge documents as per institutional policy.
3. Complete patient documentation for medical records within time frames provided by institutional policy. This will require documenting clearly and concisely, and a visual review of documents.
4. Correspond as appropriate in writing or telephone conversations with physicians regarding patient care and treatment.
5. Keep abreast of current approaches in the management of patients through attendance at continuing education conferences in the specialty. This will require listening and assimilating information from the conferences.
6. Request appropriate consultations for patients by phone conversations or in writing to other physicians.
7. Committed to expanding MD Anderson's rheumatology footprint to best meet the needs of older adults across the institution.
8. Willingness to take on a leadership role in the development of the rheumatology service, including leading quality improvement initiatives, program evaluation and training of additional staff.
iii. Typify a role model as a practitioner for faculty, fellows, residents, and students.
iv. Provide peer review for assessing the clinical practice of faculty within the Department.
Must be able to work within a context of very intense interpersonal relationships including other physicians, staff, patients, and subordinates.
Complies with all policies and procedures.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: The faculty member must have completed the M.D. degree or equivalent in an accredited medical school and be licensed as a physician in the State of Texas. The faculty member must have completed residency training in an approved American Residency Program or equivalent, have made an application and been accepted by the American Board of Internal Medicine and must have completed fellowship training in an approved American Rheumatology Fellowship Program or equivalent. Must be board certified in Internal Medicine and board certified (or eligible) in the subspecialty of Rheumatology (or foreign equivalent) or obtain board certification within 3 years of employment.
EXPERIENCE: Must have at least 2 years of experience as an Instructor; or 5 years of experience post-degree with any combination of time as a clinician, clinical scientist, or GME trainee. This requirement is contingent upon a review by the Department Chair and Section Chief; candidates who do not meet the full experience requirements may still be considered on a case-by-case basis.
