What Is a Clinical Assistant Professor?

A clinical assistant professor is a tenure-track professor in a clinical field, such as law, medicine, or business. Their duties vary depending on the subject they teach, but they are often required to teach courses, attend faculty meetings, and participate in department review processes. A clinical assistant professor typically works under the supervision of the dean of their program. Qualifications for this job vary, but many clinical professors have postsecondary education and career experience in their field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Clinical Assistant Professor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Clinical Assistant Professor, you need an advanced degree in your field, relevant clinical experience, and a demonstrated ability to teach at the university level. Familiarity with learning management systems (LMS), electronic medical records (EMR), and often board certification or state licensure are important technical requirements. Strong communication, mentorship, and organizational skills help foster student learning and collaboration with peers. These competencies ensure effective teaching, high-quality patient care, and contribute to the academic and clinical missions of the institution.

What are some common challenges Clinical Assistant Professors face when balancing teaching, research, and clinical responsibilities?

Clinical Assistant Professors often juggle multiple responsibilities, including teaching students, conducting research, and providing patient care. Balancing these duties can be challenging, as each requires significant time and attention. Time management and prioritization skills are essential, especially during peak academic periods or when clinical demands increase. Many find it helpful to collaborate closely with colleagues, seek mentorship, and utilize institutional support to manage workloads effectively and maintain a healthy work-life balance.
