Job description

Baker Botts, a leading international full-service law firm recognized for our deep industry knowledge, is seeking an engaged, outgoing business development and marketing professional at the mid-level to join our Client Development (CD) team as a Client Development Manager supporting the Intellectual Property practice. This hybrid (3 days in office), full-time, exempt position offers excellent benefits and may be based in the firm's Washington, DC; New York; or Dallas offices. In this role, you'll partner closely with attorneys, firm leadership, and the Client Development team to develop compelling pitch materials and responses to Requests for Proposals (RFPs), and to advance business development and marketing initiatives for the Intellectual Property practice group.

Essential Duties and Primary Responsibilities:
  • Lead the implementation of strategic business development plans; track progress against goals and report on results.
  • Develop business development and marketing deliverables, including pitch materials, formal RFP responses, brochures, thought leadership pieces, invitations, website content, and other tailored marketing materials.
  • Play a key role in supporting our Intellectual Property department by identifying business development and marketing opportunities in this area and taking action to pursue them.
  • Identify opportunities to strengthen and refresh content while meeting client needs.
  • Prepare survey and award submissions and compile client references for publications such as Chambers, The Legal 500, and Law360.
  • Track Intellectual Property experience and matters to support a range of business development and marketing efforts.
  • Plan and execute client seminars and external events that promote the practices, managing details through post-event follow-up.
  • Help organize speaking opportunities and conference sponsorships; serve as a liaison between internal and external stakeholders on attendance and logistics.
  • Collaborate with the competitive intelligence team to produce, analyze, and share client and industry research to support initiatives and client meetings.
  • Maintain and monitor digital marketing channels, including the firm's internal website and event email campaigns, ensuring content is engaging, accurate, and timely.
  • Coordinate internal communications related to marketing initiatives to keep attorneys and staff informed and aligned (e.g., event announcements, internal presentations); promote knowledge sharing across teams and departments.
  • Help develop and maintain marketing collateral libraries (e.g., presentations, bios, practice descriptions, case studies, templates), ensuring materials are current, consistently formatted, and aligned with brand standards.
  • Support regular reporting on Intellectual Property practice metrics and assist with budget management.
  • Support additional business development initiatives and special projects, as needed.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in marketing, business administration, or a related field required.
  • At least five years of business development/marketing experience in a law firm or professional services environment preferred.
  • Strong business acumen and understanding of business development and marketing principles in professional services, including client targeting and client management; intellectual curiosity and a commitment to expanding market knowledge.
  • Ability to develop strategy, plan effectively, and execute business development and marketing initiatives in collaboration with others.
  • Collaborative, team-focused approach with a positive attitude.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to interact confidently with attorneys.
  • High attention to detail and strong organizational skills; able to prioritize multiple time-sensitive tasks and adapt as priorities change.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment with competing demands.
  • Ability to develop practical, creative solutions as issues arise.
  • Strong interpersonal skills; comfortable working with firm leadership and key stakeholders, and able to collaborate effectively with attorneys and staff.

  • Candidate must have strong skills in MS Office software (Teams, Outlook, PowerPoint, Word, and Excel); working knowledge of Vuture, Foundation, PitchPerfect, and Sitecore a plus.
  • Candidate should have experience with CRM software; experience with Intapp a plus.
  • Candidate should be comfortable utilizing AI tools in their workflow including Harvey AI and Microsoft CoPilot.
  • Candidate should be comfortable using Web-based software and research tools, experience with Docket Navigator, Pitchbook, Capital IQ, Monitor Suite, Hoover's, and others a plus.

Extent of Public Contact (Within and outside the Firm)
  • Extensive contact with lawyers and staff in all locations at all levels.
  • High degree of contact with the Pricing, Financial Services and Knowledge Services teams.
  • Moderate degree of contact with the Diversity and Inclusion and Professional Development teams.
  • Moderate degree of contact with clients.

Physical Demands
  • You must be able to work at a computer for extensive periods of time.
  • You must be able to routinely lift and carry event materials and other items up to 10 pounds.
  • You must be able to function in a standard office environment.

Working Condition and Environment
  • Your work will normally be performed in a typical office environment, which will necessitate the ability to visit face-to-face and virtually with firm lawyers, staff and external contacts.
  • Your position is full-time and requires a five-day work week and standard hours as they are outlined in the firm policy manual.
  • Overtime will be required on occasion including evenings and weekends, and some limited travel may be required for you to perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Your role may be hybrid and will require a minimum of three days per week (or at least 60%) present in the office, and up to two days per week (40%) may be performed remotely.

The salary range for this position if filled in New York is $115,000-$140,000 annually, or if filled in Washington, DC is $110,000 - $135,000 annually. The actual compensation will be based on a combination of factors.
