What is a cleantech startup?

A cleantech startup is a new or early-stage company focused on developing technologies, products, or services that help reduce environmental impact, improve energy efficiency, or promote sustainable resource use. These startups often work in sectors such as renewable energy, energy storage, water purification, waste management, and sustainable transportation. Their goal is to address environmental challenges while building commercially viable businesses. Cleantech startups are important drivers of innovation in the transition to a more sustainable and low-carbon economy.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a cleantech startup, and why are they important?

To thrive in a cleantech startup, you need a solid background in environmental science, engineering, or business, often supported by relevant degrees or experience in sustainability. Familiarity with clean energy technologies, data analytics tools, and project management systems is typically required. Creative problem-solving, adaptability, and strong teamwork skills help individuals excel in the fast-evolving startup environment. These competencies drive innovation, facilitate rapid growth, and help startups effectively tackle pressing environmental challenges.

What are some common challenges faced when working at a cleantech startup, and how can job seekers prepare for them?

Job description

Making the Metals Powering the World
Solcoa is building the next generation of American metalmaking, starting with rare earths - the metals of power and motion. We've developed a new chemistry that converts rare earth oxides into high-purity metals - the materials inside every EV, fighter jet, wind turbine, and data center - cleaner, cheaper, and faster than any conventional process. Now we're scaling it to thousands of tonnes of annual production.
The Role
The Technical Recruiter will be responsible for identifying, engaging, and hiring top talent across our engineering, process, and technical operations teams. You'll partner closely with our founders to scale a world-class team during a pivotal growth period as we commission our first plant. This role requires a strong executor with experience recruiting for technical and manufacturing roles, exceptional relationship-building skills, and a track record of closing highly competitive candidates in specialized, hard-to-fill functions.
What You'll Do
  • Partner with hiring managers across process engineering, chemistry, materials science, mechanical engineering, and manufacturing operations to understand hiring needs, technical requirements, and team dynamics
  • Develop and execute targeted sourcing strategies to attract top talent across rare earths, metallurgy, chemical and process engineering, mechanical engineering, and advanced manufacturing
  • Own the end-to-end recruiting process, including sourcing, screening, interview management, and offer negotiation
  • Build and maintain strong pipelines of technical candidates for both immediate and future hiring needs as we scale from pilot to commercial production
  • Conduct in-depth candidate assessments, evaluating both technical capability and alignment with our mission and values
  • Provide market insights on talent trends, compensation benchmarks, and the competitive landscape across cleantech, semiconductors, and advanced manufacturing to inform hiring decisions
  • Deliver a high-quality candidate experience with clear communication and strong process execution
  • Own our applicant tracking system (Ashby) and continuously improve workflows, templates, and reporting
  • Track recruiting activity, funnel metrics, and hiring outcomes to continuously improve performance
What You Bring
Required
  • Technical recruiting experience in a startup, in-house manufacturing environment or recruiting agency (focused on technical recruiting)
  • Proven success hiring for technical roles (e.g., process engineering, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, manufacturing engineering, metallurgy, operators, and technicians)
  • Strong ability to partner with and influence founders, engineering leaders, and technical stakeholders
  • Solid understanding of technical roles, skill sets, and hiring landscapes in hard tech or advanced manufacturing
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and stakeholder management skills
  • Ability to assess technical talent and calibrate effectively with hiring teams
  • Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple searches in a fast-paced, hands-on environment
  • Data-driven mindset with a focus on delivering results

Preferred
  • Experience recruiting in rare earths, metallurgy, recycling, battery materials, or semiconductor industries
  • Experience recruiting hourly/non-exempt operators and technicians in addition to engineering roles
  • Experience building recruiting and TA processes at an early stage company

Compensation & Benefits
  • Competitive base salary
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance
  • Company-provided lunch daily
  • Visa sponsorship available if needed
