Associate or Full Professor of Classics Location: Amherst, MA Open Date: Jun 09, 2026 The Department of Classics at Amherst College invites applications for two positions—a full‐time tenure‐track position at the rank of assistant professor of classics and a full‐time tenured position at the rank of associate or full professor of classics. The appointment with tenure will be contingent upon a positive tenure review. Both positions will begin on July 1, 2027, and both require a Ph.D. in classics or a related field by the start of the appointment. Responsibilities Teach Greek and Latin at all levels and provide courses of general appeal in Greco‐Roman studies. Bring an original and generative set of research projects, with a record of publication, teaching, and professional service for the tenured position. Advise senior thesis projects and direct writing and research at all undergraduate levels. Participate in the life of the college and the department, including service and interdisciplinary teaching opportunities such as the First‐Year Seminar Program. Qualifications Ph.D. in classics or a related field by July 1, 2027. A well‐articulated research plan complementary to existing faculty expertise. Demonstrated ability to teach with distinction Greek and Latin and to engage undergraduate students. Excellent track record of scholarship, teaching, and professional service (for the tenured position). Areas of Research Interest Visual and material culture Rhetoric, law, and democracy Social and cultural history Performance and reception Knowledge production (scientific and technical) Compensation & Benefits Assistant Professor of Classics (tenure‐track): salary range $90,000–$125,000. Associate Professor of Classics: salary range $105,000–$135,000. Full Professor of Classics: salary range $120,000–$200,000.
