Claims Unit Managers are professionals who oversee a team of claims adjusters or examiners within an insurance company. They are responsible for managing daily operations, ensuring claims are processed accurately and efficiently, and maintaining compliance with company policies and legal regulations. Claims Unit Managers also handle escalated or complex cases, provide training and mentorship to staff, and monitor performance metrics to improve service quality. These skills and qualities are crucial to efficiently managing claims operations, minimizing risk, and ensuring regulatory compliance.

Operating as an independent business unit within a major global insurance holding company, we combine the agile, client-centric experience of a boutique firm with the robust resources and financial backing of a global enterprise.

Our specialized Personal Effects division provides tailored insurance solutions for household goods and personal property, supporting storage partners and individuals navigating complex domestic and international relocations. We pride ourselves on efficiency, technology-driven solutions, and delivering compassionate, accurate service during stressful transitions.

Summary of the Role

The Claims Specialist – Personal Effects is a key member of our Claims Department, responsible for managing the full lifecycle of household goods and personal effects claims. This role requires a balance of technical coverage analysis, strong customer communication, and disciplined claim-handling practices.

Key Responsibilities

  • Investigation & Evaluation: Conduct thorough investigations of claims arising from the transit or storage of household goods and personal effects, including domestic moves, international shipments, and storage.
  • Coverage & Liability Analysis: Review and interpret applicable policy forms, apply provisions to factual scenarios, and determine coverage and liability.
  • Valuation & Settlement: Assess the value of lost or damaged items and negotiate fair, accurate settlements consistent with company guidelines.
  • Customer Advocacy & Communication: Communicate clearly, empathetically, and proactively with insured individuals and clients.
  • Documentation & Compliance: Maintain meticulous and timely claim documentation following internal controls and regulatory standards.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration: Work closely with internal departments, surveyors, independent adjusters, and brokers.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Required Experience: 5–7 years of relevant claims experience (5+ years as a Claims Adjuster preferred).
  • Industry Background: Experience in Property & Casualty (P&C), Inland Marine, or Household Goods/Moving claims is highly preferred.
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Licensing: Valid Claims Adjuster license(s), or a strong willingness to obtain them promptly upon hire.
  • Skills: Strong analytical, negotiation, and communication skills with a customer-focused mindset. Ability to manage a high-volume caseload efficiently.
  • Technical Proficiency: Experience navigating modern claims management systems and productivity suites (e.g., Google Workspace).
  • Travel: Negligible.

Salary & Benefits

  • Expected Salary Range: $70,000 – $75,000 * (Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as the successful candidate’s skills, experience, and geographic working location).*
  • Total Compensation & Benefits: We offer a comprehensive benefits package, including:
  • Health, dental, vision, life, and disability insurance.
  • Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) and Health Savings Accounts (HSA).
  • 401(k) retirement plan with company match.
  • Paid Time Off (PTO) benefits, including vacation, sick, and personal days.
  • Eligibility for performance-based incentives or bonuses depending on the position level.
