Job Summary Job Summary: Performs a variety of tasks by providing the public with a safe and secure environment for all by safeguarding life, patrolling assigned areas, making arrests, writing citations, preparing reports, and preserving the peace while defending the rights and liberties guaranteed to every individual by the Constitution of the United States of America. Passing of a drug screening required prior to appointment Passing of a background check prior to appointment Buchanan County is an EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER Essential Duties and Responsibilities Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Responds to citizen complaints and calls for service, performing investigations, gathering evidence, conducting searches, processing fingerprints, and serving the citizens of Buchanan County Patrols assigned neighborhoods of the County to ensure the safety and well-being of citizens Interviews witnesses or canvass the neighborhoods for possible witnesses and to establish suspects Records daily activities, submitting logs, and documenting reports on law violations for the appropriate authorities Operates radios, telephones, and other communications to respond to public complaints and other calls Sets up necessary barriers for crime scenes and performing crowd control when necessary Patrols and guards' buildings, including courthouses, in order to provide security, enforce laws, and arrest violators Conducts the transportation of prisoners Provides service of civil process of all paperwork related to civil and criminal court documentation, as received from the court systems Other Duties and Responsibilities: May be required to operate office equipment, including but not limited to: copy machine, computer, phone, etc. Regularly prepare and review documents and polices Carry out any other duties assigned by the Sheriff Education/Experience High School diploma required.

Preference will be given to applicants that are experienced peace officers, and who are currently MO POST certified, however some exceptional candidates may be sent to the Academy. Additional Requirements Be a citizen of the United States Be at least 18 years of age Must possess a valid Missouri operator's license at time of appointment Must pass a background check - no felony convictions Applicants must meet minimum qualifications of the FBI and MSHP CJIS Security policies Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Applicants must be able to meet the strenuous physical demands of law enforcement activities, including but not limited to: arresting combative individuals, climbing ladders and multiple flights of stairs, rapidly entering and exiting vehicles, and have normal hearing with or without a hearing aid. Proficient in the use of all issued firearms, impact weapons, chemical munitions, stun devices, etc.

Ability to classify, compute, and tabulate data and information following a prescribed plan requiring the exercise of some judgement Ability to compare, count, differentiate, measure, and sort information Ability to utilize a variety of information, such as spreadsheets, statistical and narrative reports, assessment lists, information forms, indexes, code manuals, policies, procedures, guidelines, and non-routine correspondence Ability to communicate orally and in writing with a variety of Citizens, Government representatives, Attorneys, and County personnel. Ability to exercise the judgement and decisiveness in situations involving a variety of duties subject to frequent change Able to work independently and as part of a team Strong attention to detail, problem solving skills, organization skills, and handle multiple incidents simultaneously Working Environment/Physical Requirements: Some work in an office setting with a controlled environment. Exposure to extreme weather conditions and highly intense situations.

Extended sitting while conducting field operations. Physical activity includes bending, walking, lifting, standing, running and stooping. Exposure to environmental conditions such as dirt, dust, loud noise, fumes and sudden temperature change.

May have exposure to blood and other bodily fluids. Visual acuity and color perception a must. Normal hearing ability essential.

Occasional intense physical contact while affecting arrests. Occasional sprint in process of apprehending a suspect. Physical strength to subdue combative individuals.

Must perform these functions in a range of conditions including residences, stairwell, traffic-ways and open areas over uneven surfaces. Must refrain from using tobacco products while on duty. Employee Behavior and Conduct: County employees shall conduct themselves in a professional manner.
