What is civil engineering technology?

Civil engineering technology is a field that focuses on the practical application of engineering principles to the design, construction, and maintenance of infrastructure projects, such as roads, bridges, buildings, and water systems. Civil engineering technologists assist engineers by preparing drawings, conducting site inspections, testing materials, and ensuring projects meet technical standards and regulations. They play a key role in transforming engineering plans into functional, safe, and sustainable structures.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a civil engineering technologist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Civil Engineering Technologist, you need a solid understanding of engineering principles, construction materials, and surveying methods, usually supported by a diploma or degree in civil engineering technology. Proficiency with CAD software, GIS systems, and project management tools is often required, along with relevant certifications like CET (Certified Engineering Technologist). Strong problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills help you excel in coordinating with engineers, contractors, and clients. These skills and qualifications are vital for ensuring that infrastructure projects are designed, managed, and executed efficiently and safely.

What are some common challenges faced by civil engineering technologists when working on construction projects?

Civil Engineering Technologists often encounter challenges such as coordinating with diverse teams, managing tight project deadlines, and adapting to unexpected site conditions. They need to balance technical design work with on-site inspections and ensure compliance with safety and regulatory standards. Effective communication and problem-solving skills are crucial for addressing issues that arise during construction, such as material delays or design modifications.

What is the difference between Civil Engineering Technology vs Civil Engineering?

While both roles support civil projects, Civil Engineering Technicians focus on practical application, construction, and project execution, often working under engineers. Civil Engineers are involved in designing and analyzing projects, requiring a deeper theoretical understanding. Both careers are vital in the civil industry, but they differ in education, responsibilities, and work scope.

What jobs can I get with civil engineering technology?

Graduates with a degree in civil engineering technology can work as civil engineering technicians, construction managers, surveyors, or site inspectors. These roles involve assisting with project design, planning, and supervision, often requiring knowledge of engineering software and construction methods.

If you are based outside the Los Angeles area, we still welcome your application - we value talent from all geographic backgrounds and want to hear from you if you are able to work on-site in LA.
Role Purpose
As Manager, Civil Engineering, you will establish the civil engineering foundation of LA28's venues, advancing designs from concept through construction so every venue is fit-for-purpose for Games time. Reporting to the Senior Manager, Civil Engineering, you will translate stakeholder requirements into cost-effective, constructable civil solutions across a multi-venue portfolio. In the years leading up to the Games, your engineering judgment shapes infrastructure that does not exist yet into venues ready for the world.
Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the civil aspects of venue design books, advancing designs through increasing levels of detail to meet schedule milestones.
  • Coordinate stakeholder requirements into cost-effective, streamlined engineering solutions that meet fit-for-purpose requirements across all venues.
  • Collaborate with architects and engineering disciplines and oversee external resources to integrate civil engineering into venue infrastructure design.
  • Partner with Accessibility, Energy, Technology, and other functional areas to integrate civil works requirements.
  • Partner with Cost and Procurement to elevate delivery and procurement risks and identify savings opportunities.

Required Competencies
  • 5+ years of experience with civil engineering infrastructure design and construction, plus an accredited Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or related engineering field.
  • Knowledge of relevant industry codes, standards, and practices related to key civil siteworks activities, including site preparation, earthwork, drainage, vehicular circulation, utility connections, and fire and life safety considerations.
  • Experience supporting complex permit applications with various authorities having jurisdictions.
  • Detail-oriented with excellent organizational skills and command of collaboration tools (Office 365, SharePoint, Smartsheet, Autodesk Cloud, etc.).
  • Experience leading diverse teams delivering complex, high-profile infrastructure projects, with demonstrated commitment to co-creation and collaborative decision-making.
  • Knowledge of fundamental project management concepts (e.g., scope, schedule, budget) and strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Valued Experience
  • Professional Engineering (PE) license in California.
  • Project Management and Construction Certifications.
  • Experience in design and construction in the US and California markets, including applying for and obtaining civil works permits.

What We Offer
  • Real ownership of the civil engineering scope behind every LA28 venue.
  • Direct influence over how venues perform for athletes, fans, and broadcast.
  • A collaborative, multi-disciplinary team spanning architecture, accessibility, energy, and technology.
  • The chance to shape infrastructure that doesn't exist yet into venues ready for the Games.

What This Role Means for the Games
Your civil engineering work keeps every venue safe, compliant, and ready to perform when the world arrives for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
  • Available to work onsite in our Downtown Los Angeles-based office, with travel to venue sites and partner offices as needed.
  • The majority of work will be conducted in an office setting, requiring extended periods of time using computers, phones, and other office equipment.
  • The LA28 office is an open floorplan working environment; employees must be able to work efficiently in an open cubicle environment.
  • Hours of work may vary, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, especially during peak event periods.
  • Perform other duties as required; the role will evolve over time and may include operational responsibilities during the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
