How much do civil engineering technology jobs pay per hour?

As of Jul 10, 2026, the average hourly pay for civil engineering technology in the United States is $25.39, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $20.43 and $27.64 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is the difference between Civil Engineering Technology vs Civil Engineering?

AspectCivil Engineering TechnologyCivil Engineering
CredentialsAssociate's degree or diploma in civil engineering technologyBachelor's degree in civil engineering
Work EnvironmentPractical, fieldwork, construction sites, labsTheoretical, design offices, project planning
Job FocusImplementation, surveying, project managementDesign, analysis, research
Employer & Industry UsageConstruction firms, government agencies, consulting firmsEngineering firms, government agencies, consulting firms

While both roles support civil projects, Civil Engineering Technicians focus on practical application, construction, and project execution, often working under engineers. Civil Engineers are involved in designing and analyzing projects, requiring a deeper theoretical understanding. Both careers are vital in the civil industry, but they differ in education, responsibilities, and work scope.

Can you make $500,000 as a civil engineer?

Civil engineering technology roles typically do not reach $500,000 annually; most salaries range from $50,000 to $120,000 depending on experience, location, and specialization. High earnings are more common for senior engineers, project managers, or those working in specialized fields or consulting firms. Advanced certifications and extensive experience can increase earning potential but reaching half a million dollars is uncommon in this field.

What engineers make $300,000 a year?

Senior engineers in specialized fields such as petroleum, aerospace, or software engineering can earn $300,000 or more annually, especially with extensive experience, advanced skills, and leadership roles. High-level positions often require advanced degrees, certifications, and a strong track record in complex projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Civil Engineering Technologist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Civil Engineering Technologist, you need a solid understanding of engineering principles, construction materials, and surveying methods, usually supported by a diploma or degree in civil engineering technology. Proficiency with CAD software, GIS systems, and project management tools is often required, along with relevant certifications like CET (Certified Engineering Technologist). Strong problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills help you excel in coordinating with engineers, contractors, and clients. These skills and qualifications are vital for ensuring that infrastructure projects are designed, managed, and executed efficiently and safely.

What are some common challenges faced by Civil Engineering Technologists when working on construction projects?

Civil Engineering Technologists often encounter challenges such as coordinating with diverse teams, managing tight project deadlines, and adapting to unexpected site conditions. They need to balance technical design work with on-site inspections and ensure compliance with safety and regulatory standards. Effective communication and problem-solving skills are crucial for addressing issues that arise during construction, such as material delays or design modifications.

What jobs can you get with a civil engineering technology degree?

A civil engineering technology degree prepares individuals for roles such as civil engineering technician, construction manager, survey technician, or project coordinator. These jobs involve assisting with design, planning, and construction of infrastructure projects, often requiring knowledge of CAD software, site inspections, and adherence to safety standards.

What is civil engineering technology?

Civil engineering technology is a field that focuses on the practical application of engineering principles to the design, construction, and maintenance of infrastructure projects, such as roads, bridges, buildings, and water systems. Civil engineering technologists assist engineers by preparing drawings, conducting site inspections, testing materials, and ensuring projects meet technical standards and regulations. They play a key role in transforming engineering plans into functional, safe, and sustainable structures.

What do civil engineering technologists do?

Civil engineering technologists assist civil engineers in designing, developing, and supervising construction projects such as roads, bridges, and water systems. They prepare technical drawings, conduct site inspections, and use tools like AutoCAD and surveying equipment to ensure project specifications are met. Their work often involves collaboration with engineers, technicians, and construction teams to ensure safety and compliance.
