What is a civil engineering project engineer?

Civil Engineering Project Engineers are professionals who oversee the planning, design, and execution of construction projects such as roads, bridges, buildings, and water systems. They coordinate with architects, contractors, and clients to ensure projects meet technical requirements, budgets, and timelines. These engineers are responsible for problem-solving on-site issues, ensuring compliance with safety and environmental regulations, and maintaining project documentation. Their role is crucial in transforming engineering designs into functional structures while managing resources efficiently.

How does a civil engineering project engineer typically collaborate with other team members during a project?

As a Civil Engineering Project Engineer, you will regularly coordinate with architects, contractors, and other engineers to ensure that project specifications are met and timelines are maintained. This collaboration often involves attending project meetings, sharing updates on progress, resolving technical challenges, and reviewing designs or plans to address any issues that arise. Strong communication and teamwork are essential, as you'll act as a bridge between various stakeholders to keep the project aligned and moving forward. This collaborative environment not only enhances project outcomes but also provides valuable learning experiences and networking opportunities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a civil engineering project engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Civil Engineering Project Engineer, you need a solid background in civil engineering principles, project management, and a relevant engineering degree, often with a Professional Engineer (PE) license. Job description

This isn't your typical Project Engineer role.
About 80% of your time will be hands-on engineering and project delivery, with the other 20% focused on project management and client coordination. You'll stay close to the technical work while using your experience to lead projects, mentor others, and build strong client relationships.
Civiltec Engineering is seeking an experienced Professional Engineer to provide senior-level technical leadership for civil infrastructure projects throughout Arizona. Projects may include water, utilities, natural gas pipelines, municipal infrastructure, drainage, site development, and general civil engineering.
A Little About Us
We take our work seriously, but we don't always take ourselves too seriously. We're a collaborative, people-focused team that values good engineering, strong relationships, and having a little fun along the way. We believe experienced engineers should have a voice, room to make decisions, and the opportunity to make an impact. And with our 9/80 schedule, you'll have every other Friday to enjoy life outside of work.
What You'll Be Doing
  • Lead civil engineering design, analysis, and project delivery from concept through completion.
  • Prepare and oversee plans, specifications, calculations, reports, estimates, permits, and construction documents.
  • Provide technical direction, engineering judgment, and QA/QC for project deliverables.
  • Direct AutoCAD Civil 3D design and production efforts, including base mapping, utility research, conflict identification, and plan preparation for civil, water, utility, and natural gas pipeline projects.
  • Serve as Engineer of Record and sign/seal documents as required.
  • Lead and mentor project teams while coordinating with clients, consultants, agencies, utilities, contractors, and other stakeholders.
  • Support project scope, schedules, budgets, resources, client coordination, and successful delivery.
  • Support proposals, fee development, technical approaches, presentations, and business development activities.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise sound engineering judgment, solve complex problems, and deliver high-quality work.
  • Assist with proposals, scopes of work, fee development, technical approaches, and business development activities as needed.

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering.
  • Current Arizona PE license required.
  • 5-10+ years of progressively responsible civil engineering experience.
  • Strong AutoCAD Civil 3D skills.
  • Experience with civil infrastructure projects, particularly water, utilities, natural gas, municipal, drainage, or site development.
  • Strong technical judgment, communication, problem-solving, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to balance hands-on engineering with project management, client service, and mentoring.
