How much do civil engineer salary jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 16, 2026, the average yearly pay for civil engineer salary in the United States is $82,674.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $67,500.00 and $98,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a civil engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Civil Engineer, you need a solid background in mathematics, physics, and engineering principles, usually supported by a bachelor's degree in civil engineering and, often, a Professional Engineer (PE) license. Familiarity with design and analysis software like AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and project management tools is typically required. Strong problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills help civil engineers collaborate effectively and manage complex projects. These competencies ensure infrastructure projects are designed safely, efficiently, and within regulatory standards.

What are some typical career advancement paths for a civil engineer, and how can I progress in this field?

Civil engineers often begin their careers as junior or entry-level engineers, working under the supervision of experienced professionals. With experience and the acquisition of a Professional Engineer (PE) license, they can advance to project manager or senior engineer roles, overseeing larger projects and teams. Many civil engineers also transition into specialized fields such as structural, transportation, or environmental engineering, or move into leadership positions like department head or executive roles within engineering firms. Networking, continuous learning, and obtaining industry certifications can significantly support career progression in civil engineering.

What is the average salary of a civil engineer?

The average salary of a civil engineer in the United States is typically between $65,000 and $95,000 per year, depending on experience, education, location, and industry. Entry-level civil engineers may start at around $60,000, while those with several years of experience or advanced degrees can earn over $100,000 annually. Major metropolitan areas and positions within specialized sectors, such as infrastructure or environmental engineering, often offer higher salaries.
