Position Description

For more than 100 years, we have built our reputation on professionalism, integrity, and a deep commitment to the people, businesses, and communities we serve.
At GBI, we believe our people are our greatest strength. We are excited to welcome a Project Engineer Intern to our Kapolei, Hawaii team on the island of O'ahu for summer 2026. Our office division locations are in Washington, Oregon, California, and the Hawaiian Islands.
Position Summary
As an Engineering Intern, you have the opportunity to apply your academic knowledge and training in a real-world setting. Under supervision of a Project Engineer, Project Manager or Estimator, you will be assisting with construction-related duties including layout, form design, and subcontract monitoring. You will also be assisting in change order preparations, plan checking, document control, quality control and safety monitoring. This experience will help you to learn what a GBI project engineer does on a daily basis.
Essential Functions
  • Assist Project Manager/Project Engineers/Estimators with all construction related duties. Perform a variety of physical and mental tasks on construction projects.
  • Assist Project Engineer and Project Manager in tracking work hour utilization and productivity.
  • Maintain up-to-date file or library of material suppliers, current labor laws, equipment rental rates and qualified subcontractors by category.
  • May assist field personnel in a variety of manual tasks on construction projects.
  • Order suppliers and other materials, as needed.
  • May coordinate material deliveries and subcontract work in accordance with progress schedule and adjust as necessary due to changes.
  • May resolve or assist Project Engineer and/or Project Manager in resolving, design and detail problems with owners, design agencies, suppliers and subcontractors.
  • May attend subcontractor job meetings and other construction meetings
  • Prepare cost breakdown, reviews with Project Engineer and Project Manager for concurrence and makes adjustments as necessary.
  • Prepare periodic completion data for job cost report and monitor printouts to correct posting and other errors.
  • Prepare data for monthly invoices, forced account sheets, pay estimates, monthly increases, back-charges, if applicable, and submits to Project Engineer and/or Project Manager in a timely manner.
  • Assure that details and submittals are received, submitted and processed. Supervise submittal of control data.
  • Prepare special reports as requested by Project Engineer and/or Project Manager.
  • Review timecards daily and communicate any discrepancies to the payroll clerk.
  • Answer the phones and performs other clerical work (such as screening telephone calls, taking accurate messages, faxing, copying and filing).

Compensation and Benefits
  • 12-week paid internships with a pay range of $18-$25/Hr.
  • If eligible, we offer full-time hourly non-exempt employees and their families, medical, dental and vision coverage, plus wellness incentives and limited paid sick leave.

Required Education, Experience, and Technical Knowledge
  • Candidates must have the legal right to work in the US without employer sponsorship.
  • Must be currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in construction management, civil engineering, or related major, from an accredited university
  • Travel may be required
  • Valid driver's license is required
