What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Citizen Developer position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Citizen Developer, you need a strong understanding of business processes, problem-solving abilities, and foundational knowledge of application development concepts, often gained through self-directed learning or formal training. Familiarity with low-code/no-code platforms such as Microsoft Power Apps, Salesforce, or AppSheet is typically required, and certifications in these platforms can be advantageous. Strong communication, collaboration, and project management skills will help you effectively translate end-user needs and work across departments. Can I make 100k as a software developer?

A citizen developer typically creates applications using low-code or no-code platforms and usually earns less than professional software developers. Achieving a salary of 100k or more generally requires experience in traditional software development, coding skills, and working in roles that involve complex programming or enterprise-level projects. Salary levels vary based on location, experience, and industry, but citizen developers usually do not reach the 100k mark without transitioning into more advanced development roles.

What is a Citizen Developer job?

What is the difference between a developer and a citizen developer?

A citizen developer is a non-IT professional who creates applications using low-code or no-code platforms, often without formal programming training. In contrast, a developer typically has technical skills in coding and software development, working with traditional programming languages and development environments. Citizen developers focus on rapid, simple solutions, while developers handle complex, scalable software projects.

Job description

About the Role
The P2P organization is undergoing a critical digital transformation to enhance efficiency, compliance, and scale. We are seeking a highly technical and strategic Technical Solution Manager to spearhead this shift. This role will focus on defining, implementing, and governing advanced technical solutions, including process automation, citizen developer platforms, and Generative AI (GenAI) capabilities, to transform the global Procure-to-Pay (P2P) lifecycle. This position requires a leader who is technically savvy and deeply familiar with cutting-edge technology to drive the "AI-Tech Citizen Developer" movement within FinOps-P2P.
What the Candidate Will Do
  • Lead Digital Transformation: Define the technical roadmap and architecture for P2P digital transformation initiatives, focusing on leveraging low-code/no-code platforms and GenAI for substantial process automation.
  • Citizen Developer Platform Ownership: Drive the strategy, adoption, and governance of the citizen developer tech stack (e.g., Microsoft Power Apps, Power Automate, Google AppSheet, and Google Apps Script) to create scalable solutions and integrations.
  • GenAI Implementation: Identify, prioritize, and deploy high-impact use cases for Generative AI, including leveraging tools like Google Vertex AI Agent Builder, to accelerate workflow automation and decision-making within P2P.
  • Automation and Optimization: Partner with P2P Global Process Owners to analyze end-to-end P2P workflows to uncover inefficiencies and translate complex business problems into structured technical solutions for automation.
  • Technical Governance: own the technical governance for all citizen-developed solutions (often referred to as "shadow IT solutions") to ensure they meet strict requirements for security, reliability, and compliance.
  • Cross-Functional Partnership: Collaborate closely with Global Process Owners (GPOs), IT, Finance AI-COE, and other FinOps teams to ensure technical solutions are aligned with process standards, business needs, and enterprise-wide governance.
  • Technical Coaching: Champion technical literacy and mentor stakeholders within the P2P GPO team on best practices for solution design and technical governance.

Basic Qualifications
  • 5+ years of experience in technical solution design, process automation, or enterprise architecture, specifically in a Finance or Procure-to-Pay domain.
  • Deep technical understanding and proven experience implementing solutions using citizen developer/low-code/no-code platforms, such as Microsoft Power Platform (Power Apps, Power Automate) and/or Google's AppSheet, Apps Script, etc.
  • Demonstrated technical savviness and +5 years of experience with edge technologies, particularly the practical application of Generative AI (GenAI) or Machine Learning (ML) for process transformation.
  • Strong background in technical governance and implementing control frameworks to manage risk for user-developed applications.
  • Excellent communication skills, capable of translating technical architecture and risks into clear narratives for both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications
  • +5 years of experience in designing and deploying AI agents or custom models using platforms like Google Vertex AI Agent Builder or Copilot Studio's Agent Builder.
  • Proven ability to lead cross-functional initiatives and influence stakeholders to drive the adoption of new technical solutions.
  • Experience with financial systems, data lifecycle management, and ensuring high data quality for automated processes.
