The town of Marblehead (20,000+ pop.) seeks a forward-thinking, innovative, and service-driven Director of Technology. Working both independently and under the general direction of the Finance Director, this key leadership position serves as a division head and oversees all municipal technology operations. Marblehead is a community governed by a five-member Select Board. Our residents and staff expect high-quality services supported by reliable, secure, and accessible technology.


This position requires strategic leadership in enterprise-level IT operations, cybersecurity, infrastructure management, digital services, and educational technology. The Director of Technology will be responsible for aligning technology initiatives with long-term goals, managing an IT & Communications Specialist, and ensuring seamless and secure service delivery across all departments. The town has recently migrated to Munis and implemented multi-factor authentication (MFA). This position is expected to leverage the opportunity to make use of that platform to improve business processes and enhance staff efficiency.


This role directly supports the town's Strategic Plan, contributing to a responsive and responsible town Government. The Director will play a critical role in managing technology assets, fiber, and capital planning-ensuring our infrastructure supports current needs while preparing for future demands. A culture of professionalism, collaboration, and accountability is essential to our mission of delivering exceptional public services.

The ideal candidate will have a bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, or a related field (master's preferred), along with at least 10 years of experience in IT, including five in a leadership role. A public-sector background is strongly preferred. Candidates should have experience in cybersecurity, enterprise systems, IT governance, and team management. Certifications such as CISSP, PMP, ITIL, or CETL are a plus. Strong communication, project management, and strategic planning skills are essential. The hiring salary range is Admin Grade 10 $92K - $120K, depending on qualifications and experience.

Job Description:


The town of Marblehead is seeking an experienced, tech-savvy, and strategic IT Director to lead and manage all municipal technology operations. Reporting directly to the Finance Director, this is a unique opportunity to serve the public while overseeing day-to-day IT operations, leading long-term strategic initiatives, safeguarding digital infrastructure, and ensuring that every department, from public safety to facilities, has the tools and tech support needed to serve the community efficiently.

The IT Director works closely with our outside technology vendor to directly support public safety, service delivery, and desktop support. From keeping our systems running smoothly to introducing new solutions, your guidance ensures the Town of Marblehead remains connected, protected, and prepared.

Responsibilities: Provide vision and leadership for town-wide IT strategy and infrastructure. Manage computer networks, fiber, servers, security systems, and software platforms. Establish and enforce cybersecurity protocols, disaster recovery plans, and data protection policies. Serve as the lead liaison to department heads, vendors, and external IT service providers. Maintain physical inventory, schedule replacements, and ensure software compliance. Support and manage town-wide tech systems including fiber, Office365, cloud tools, voting clickers for Town Meeting, and copiers. Supervise IT Communications Specialist, manage user training, and customer service delivery. Prepare and manage division operating and capital budgets. Attend Annual and Special Town Meetings to set up and run systems.


Qualifications:


Bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, or a related field required (Master's preferred); Seven to Ten years of IT experience with at least five in a leadership role, ideally in a public sector or multi-department setting. Certifications such as CISSP, PMP, ITIL, CISA, CRISC, or CETL are a plus. CompTIA A+ and/or Network+ certification preferred. Experience with Microsoft 365, Barracuda, KnowBe4, and Windows Server/Active Directory environments. Working knowledge of fiber, network security, GIS, permitting software, SQL, and basic programming. Strong project management, communication, and collaboration skills.
