Position Overview

This is a full-time Media Center Professional Assistant position at Jefferson High School for the 20262027 school year. The Media Center Professional Assistant plays a vital role in supporting the daily operations of the school library/media center while helping create a welcoming, organized, and student-centered learning environment. Working under the supervision of the Media Center Specialist, the successful candidate will assist students and staff with library services, circulation, technology resources, and the overall management of the media center.

The ideal candidate will possess strong organizational skills, excellent customer service abilities, attention to detail, and a commitment to supporting student learning and literacy. This position requires the ability to work collaboratively with students, teachers, administrators, and support staff while maintaining a positive and professional presence in a busy school environment.

Primary Function

The Media Center Professional Assistant works under the supervision of the Jefferson High School Media Center Specialist and assists with the overall operation of the school media center. The position supports students and staff by maintaining library resources, providing circulation services, supervising student use of the media center, supporting technology and printing services, and ensuring the efficient day-to-day operation of the library.

Reports To

The Media Center Professional Assistant works under the direct supervision of the Jefferson High School Media Center Specialist and ultimately reports to the building principal or their designee.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with students, staff, and the public
  • Strong organizational, communication, and customer service skills
  • Ability to manage multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced environment
  • Basic technology proficiency, including the use of databases, printers, and educational software
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism in all interactions

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Library Operations

  • Check library materials in and out to students and staff
  • Re-shelve books and conduct shelf reading to ensure accurate organization of materials
  • Assist students and staff in locating books, resources, and materials
  • Print and apply due-date labels and process student holds
  • Assist students with signing in and out of the library
  • Monitor student use of the Minga kiosk and other library systems
  • Support student use of library technology resources and printers
  • Assist in preparing materials and resources for classroom use
  • Approve or deny student requests for study hall access in accordance with established procedures
  • Maintain the library calendar, including scheduling of conference room use
  • Generate and distribute overdue notices through the library management system
  • Collect and process library fines and fees
  • Monitor student behavior and enforce library and school expectations
  • Assist with student supervision throughout all areas of the library, including lunch periods and times when student assistants are unavailable
  • Create and maintain library displays as directed by the Media Center Specialist
  • Assist with annual inventory of library materials
  • Support collection development through the removal of outdated or damaged materials
  • Inspect materials for damage and perform minor repairs when appropriate
  • Laminate materials for staff and maintain records of usage
  • Maintain library operations during the absence of the Media Center Specialist
  • Communicate maintenance, custodial, and facility concerns as needed
  • Maintain the teacher workroom and support shared resources
  • Monitor and support printer operations, including replenishing paper, replacing toner, and reporting technical issues
  • Assist with the general upkeep, organization, and appearance of the media center
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Library Scout Program

  • Train and supervise student library scouts
  • Monitor student participation and performance
  • Enter daily attendance for library scouts into PowerSchool

Opening and Closing Responsibilities

  • Open the library for student use each school day
  • Close and secure the library at the end of each day
  • Oversee daily operational readiness of the media center
  • Ensure a safe, welcoming, and productive environment for students and staff
