Job description

 Itinerant Teacher for the Visually Impaired (TVI) and Orientation and Mobility Specialist 

Qualifications: 

  • Bachelors or Masters Degree in Education of Students with Visual Impairments. 

  • Active CDE License or able to obtain prior to start of school year.  

  • Certificate of Competency in reading and writing literary braille. 

  • Hold a current and valid ACVREP orientation and mobility certificate(Preferred) 

Reports To: Director of Exceptional Student Services 

Job Summary: 

Enable visually impaired students to achieve state standards through high quality instruction.  

Duties and Responsibilities:   Typical duties are listed but are not limited to the following: 

  • Participates in the identification, evaluation, and placement or monitoring process for students with vision loss, following federal and state guidelines and BOCES recommended procedures 

  • Demonstrates knowledge of specialized assessment, instruction, interventions, and modifications for individual visually impaired students (including those with multiple handicaps) through effective instruction and consultation as per the IEP/Communication Plan. 

  • Demonstrates effective skills related to instructing paraprofessionals, other staff, and teachers in the effective use of specialized equipment, communication, and modifications or accommodations for students who are visually impaired. 

  • Demonstrates effective skills in selecting, managing, and maintaining specialized materials and equipment unique to students who are visually impaired. 

  • The role of the O&M Specialist is to teach formal orientation and mobility skill to those children with visual impairments for whom they are appropriate. 

  • Administrative/Record Keeping Duties: Documentation of services in PPBOCES data management system 

  • Provide updated pupil information (VI registration, deafblind census) 

  • Identify and arrange a work/storage space at each school to be used by the VI teacher to instruct students as necessary 

  • Maintain adequate record of assessments, IEP's, and progress reports 

  • Register students with visual impairments with appropriate agencies such as the Colorado Instructional Materials Center for the Visually Handicapped (CIMC) and the Colorado Talking Books Library 

  • Adhere to professional & Ethical organization standards at national and state level. 

  • Engage in professional development activities to support licensure requirements and/or professional goals.

  • Staff will follow policies for PPBOCES as well as those reflective of districts supported.  

Evaluation: 

This position shall be evaluated in accordance with board policy on personnel evaluations. RANDA.  

Salary, Vacation, Etc.: 

This is a non exempt licensed position with a 179 day contract.  Calendar  is determined by PPBOCES and staff contract days are reflected in 179 calendar.    Annual leave is earned in accordance with Board policy. This is an itinerant position and requires travel to member school districts. Mileage reimbursement aligned with PPBOCES board policy.  

The salary shall be determined by education and experience in accordance with the BOCES Alternative Certified Salary Schedule (this can be found on our website at: www.ppboces.org). BA starting at 49,223. MA/MS starting at 54,643. 

Contracts are on an annual basis and are subject to renewal or non-renewal at the discretion of the Board. 

Working Conditions: 

  • Talking and hearing, walking, standing or bending is frequently required 

  • Reaching with hands and arms, climbing or balancing, stooping or kneeling is also required 

  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move objects up to 25 pounds 

  • Travel to assigned job site(s) requires driving and a reliable vehicle. Employee may be asked to drive to any member district at any time using personal vehicle. Reimbursement is in accordance with board policy. 

  • All required license(s) must be maintained in an active status without suspension or revocation throughout employment. 

  • Any employee may be required to stay at or return to work during meetings and/or emergencies to perform duties specific to this classification or to perform other duties as requested in an assigned position. This may require working a non-traditional work schedule or working outside normal assigned duties during the meeting and/or emergency.
