Position Purpose
Provide leadership for training, encouraging, motivating, and preparing student athletes for games, competitive events and tournaments.
Essential Functions
Ability to establish working relationships with staff members, coaches, and non-coaches
Knowledge of and ability to teach basic skills and fundamentals
Communicate effectively and enthusiastically with athletes, parents, and administrators
Organize effective practices, fundraiser, banquets, and other relevant program needs
Emphasize academics and team discipline while promoting a positive team atmosphere
Effectively recruit assistant coaches and athletes within the building
Have a plan to increase participation in the program
Have a plan to increase school and community pride in the sports program
Attend all meetings in the school, league, and state that deal directly with the sport
Model positive behaviors especially those pertaining to sportsmanship
Have full control of the team in all matters pertaining to coaching and athletic discipline
Stay informed of rule changes, trends and recommendations that affect that particular sport
Provide proper supervision of locker rooms, shower areas and equipment areas before and after practices
Assist athletes in setting and attaining long and short term personal and team performance goals
Directly supervise squad members at home and away contests
Provide completed score report forms to media outlets
Maintain and publicize appropriate individual and team statistics and records
Distribute athletic awards in accordance with school policy
Inventory and maintain athletic equipment
Be responsible for information in the CHSAA Handbook and Calhan Athletic Handbook
Work with student athletes to improve personal and teamwork skills
Additional Duties
Performs other related tasks as assigned by supervisor

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Excellent interpersonal relations, supervisory skills, self-confidence and work experience in his field
Extensive knowledge of rules, techniques and training methods relevant to the sport
Ability to focus attention on the physical and social environment and has ease of communication and sociability, maintaining emotional balance in situations of stress
Ability to communicate, interact and work effectively and cooperatively with all people including those from diverse ethnic and educational backgrounds
Ability to recognize the importance of safety in the workplace, follow safety rules, practice safe work habits, utilize appropriate safety equipment and report unsafe conditions to the appropriate administrator
Qualification Profile
Any combination of education and experience providing the required skill and knowledge for successful performance would be qualifying. Typical qualifications would be equivalent to:
Certification/License
Colorado teaching license or CHSAA Coaching Registration
First Aid and CPR certification
Criminal background check is required if not a licensed teacher
Education and Related Work Experience:
Bachelor's Degree in Education preferred
Minimum of three years of experience in the particular sport; (participating and/or coaching)
Must pass the CHSAA Coaches Test
Complete CHSAA approved concussion training immediately after hired
Must take an officials/Rule course prior to the start of their season
