What is Christian ministry?

Christian ministry refers to the work and service carried out by individuals or groups to express their faith and support others in the teachings of Christianity. This can include activities such as preaching, teaching, counseling, community service, and missionary work. Ministries can be formal roles within a church, like pastors or youth leaders, or informal efforts like volunteer outreach. The main goal is to serve others and spread the message of Christianity, both within and outside the church community.

What are some common challenges faced in Christian ministry roles, and how can new ministers prepare for them?

Christian Ministry roles often involve balancing the spiritual needs of a diverse congregation with administrative and community responsibilities. Challenges may include managing time effectively, addressing conflicts within the church, and navigating emotional or spiritual crises among members. New ministers can prepare by seeking mentorship, engaging in ongoing theological education, and developing strong communication and conflict-resolution skills. Building a supportive network within and outside the church can also help ministers navigate these challenges successfully.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in Christian ministry, and why are they important?

To thrive in Christian Ministry, you need a deep understanding of biblical teachings, pastoral care, and often a degree in theology or divinity. Familiarity with church management software, presentation tools, and sometimes certification from denominational bodies is common. Compassion, strong interpersonal communication, and leadership are soft skills that help build trust and support within faith communities. These skills enable effective spiritual guidance, community engagement, and the successful administration of ministry programs.

Job description

Applicant Requirements
We request that you submit both a resume and cover letter that demonstrates your interest and qualifications for working in a ministry position and the position that you are applying for. You will not be considered without both. Please see requirements below.
About OurCalling
At OurCalling, our work is rooted in the Gospel and powered by innovation. We are a Christ-centered ministry where every job is a ministry position.
We serve individuals experiencing homelessness and crisis through our Street Outreach and Navigation Center, walking with them on a journey from the streets toward hope, stability, and transformation. We meet each person with grace, accountability, and personalized care. We believe that healing happens through trust, relationship, and the hope of Jesus. Powered by innovation, we go beyond meeting immediate needs to create real solutions that help end homelessness one life at a time. Our commitment is to restoration, not relocation, as we help our neighbors discover a sense of belonging, purpose, and a healthy community. Our aim is to help our neighbors walk with Jesus and take the next steps toward living in healthy community.
Our culture is welcoming, intentional, hopeful, and adaptable. We innovate with courage, serve with humility, and hold firm to the belief that every guest, volunteer, donor, staff member, and partner who walks through our doors is made in the image of God. Our staff is diverse, comprising individuals from various backgrounds and experiences. Grounded in the Gospel, we are committed to loving our neighbors with compassion, accountability, and a dedication to lasting change.
Position Summary: The Donor Stewardship Specialist serves as a relational bridge between the organization and its supporters. This role is primarily focused on managing and growing a portfolio of mid-level donors, ensuring they feel valued, informed, and connected to the mission of serving the homeless community. Working under the direction of the Director of Donor Services, the Specialist will foster a culture of generosity and support all fund development and communications activities.
Essential Functions:
  • Donor Engagement & Stewardship
    • Engage a portfolio of approximately 700 mid-level donors to OurCalling who contribute between $1,000-$5,000 annually
    • Execute an engagement and stewardship process for mid-level donors, including email, phone calls, and thank-you notes, to ensure they receive the appreciation and communication that make giving a fulfilling experience
    • Cultivate relationships with current mid-level donors to understand their mission interests, needs, and capacity to grow their giving
    • Make strategic asks for increased annual support to retain and grow the mid-level donor portfolio
    • Support the Partner Engagement Specialist and the Volunteer Engagement Manager for on-site groups and events that involve donors on an as-needed basis by providing personalized engagement and mission-focused conversation for attending supporters
    • Understand and communicate the mission, programs, distinctives, and impact of OurCalling with both current and prospective donors
    • Thank all donors who make a gift of $250 or more, as assigned
  • Donor Qualification
    • Work with the development team to evaluate and identify donors in the mid-level portfolio with the potential to move into a major-giving portfolio
    • Review a donor's past partnership (giving history, event attendance, and volunteerism) to understand what aspects of the mission resonate most with them
    • Conduct thorough research to align donors' personal philanthropic goals and life's work with the organization's long-term vision
    • Collaborate with the Advancement Team to ensure OurCalling properly stewards our donors and creates a smooth journey from general support to transformational partnership
    • Evaluate donors who have given a gift of $250 or more. Engage with and identify donors who should be engaged more personally within a smaller, major-giving portfolio
  • Advancement Support
    • Lead the strategy and execution for Lighthouse Collective engagement, including creating serve days, annual CEO engagements, and personalized communication to steward and deepen their partnership
    • Provide writing support for various Advancement Team projects, including donor proposals, annual reports, major gift communications, and campaign materials
    • Provide speaking support for events and group meetings to effectively share the OurCalling mission
    • Assist in answering and responding to phone calls, emails, and voicemails for the Advancement Team, redirecting as needed to the appropriate person
    • Provide flexible support for special donor events and initiatives in collaboration with the Advancement Team

Qualification & Skills:
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
  • A minimum of 3 years of professional experience is required, ideally within a nonprofit setting and encompassing administrative, customer service, or donor relations roles
  • Ability to relate well and work effectively with multiple constituencies and audiences
  • Able to follow a process and stay on top of a task list
  • Glass half-full, see the opportunity rather than the obstacle
  • Articulate with excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
