What does a Christian editor do?

A Christian Editor reviews, edits, and refines written content to ensure it aligns with Christian values, theology, and beliefs. They work on books, articles, devotionals, and other materials, checking for accuracy, clarity, and faith-based integrity. Their role often includes proofreading, theological fact-checking, and offering feedback to enhance readability while maintaining biblical truth. Christian Editors may work for publishing houses, ministries, or independent authors, helping to produce content that inspires and educates Christian audiences.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Christian editor?

A Christian Editor needs strong editing, writing, and theological skills, usually acquired through a combination of editorial experience and a background in Christian studies or ministry. Familiarity with editorial software such as Microsoft Word, Adobe InDesign, and content management systems is highly beneficial. Attention to detail, sensitivity to diverse faith perspectives, and effective communication are valued soft skills in this role. These abilities ensure faith-aligned content is produced accurately and thoughtfully, supporting both organizational standards and audience needs.

What are some common challenges faced by Christian editors in their daily work?

Christian Editors often navigate the challenge of balancing doctrinal accuracy with accessibility for a diverse audience, ensuring content is both true to the faith tradition and engaging to a wide readership. They may also face tight deadlines, especially when working for publishers or media organizations that produce regular content. Collaboration with authors, pastors, and other editorial staff is frequent, requiring both theological discernment and strong interpersonal skills. As content needs and interpretation of religious topics can be sensitive, maintaining clear communication and mutual respect throughout the editorial process is essential.

Job description

Managing Editor - Historic Christian Publication
Columbus, OH area, Full-Time, Onsite
Salary: $67K - $74K

Some publications simply report stories. Others become part of the history they document.

Our client is a 100+ year old Christian missionary organization whose historic publication* *has helped generations of readers explore faith, theology, ministry, and missionary work throughout the United States and around the world.

We're recruiting an experienced Managing Editor for our client, a long-established Christian missionary organization with nearly 2,000 churches across the U.S. and a global ministry presence.

You'll take the editorial lead on its award-winning publication that has been telling stories of faith and mission for more than a hundred years. The next step? Bringing that legacy into a *digital-first future without losing the voice, values, and purpose that have defined it.

Just as important as editorial experience, our client is specifically seeking someone who shares and understands its Christian beliefs and mission and can authentically bring that perspective to the work.

What you'll Own

  • Editorial strategy and production across web and print
  • The evolution of *their publication *into a digital-first content platform
  • Editorial calendars, publishing schedules, contributors, and workflows
  • Commissioning and editing stories focused on faith, theology, ministry, and mission
  • Recruiting and developing writers and freelance contributors
  • Editing for voice, clarity, accuracy, consistency, and audience engagement
  • Maintaining editorial standards and style guidelines
  • Collaboration with storytelling, UX, creative, and organizational leadership
  • Publication budgets and freelance resources
  • Research, fact-checking, and content alignment
  • Occasional travel for events and story-gathering assignments

What You'll Bring

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field
  • 5–7 years of editorial, publishing, journalism, or comparable experience
  • Strong editing, writing, proofreading, and storytelling skills
  • Experience managing publications, contributors, and editorial production
  • Digital publishing experience and an understanding of how audiences consume content today
  • Excellent editorial judgment and attention to detail
  • Personal alignment with our client's Christian faith, beliefs, values, and missionary purpose
  • Experience within or familiarity with the client's denomination is strongly preferred

For an editor who believes storytelling can strengthen faith, connect communities, and inspire action, this is an opportunity to help shape what comes next for a publication with an extraordinary history.

This is a full-time role working onsite in the Columbus, OH area.
