What does a children apparel designer do?

A Children Apparel Designer is responsible for creating clothing and accessories specifically for children, ranging from infants to pre-teens. They conduct market research, sketch designs, select fabrics, and oversee the production process to ensure the garments are both stylish and appropriate for children's needs. These designers must balance creativity with practical considerations such as comfort, safety, and durability. They often collaborate with manufacturers and retailers to bring their designs to market, staying up-to-date with fashion trends and regulations specific to children's wear.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a children apparel designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Children Apparel Designer, you need strong skills in fashion design, illustration, pattern making, and a solid understanding of textiles, often supported by a degree in fashion design or a related field. Proficiency in design software such as Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and CAD systems is typically required. Creativity, attention to detail, and a keen awareness of children's comfort and safety are standout soft skills in this role. These abilities are crucial for producing appealing, functional, and safe clothing that meets both aesthetic and regulatory standards in the children's fashion market.

What are some common challenges faced by children apparel designers, and how can they be addressed?

Children apparel designers often encounter challenges such as balancing creativity with strict safety and comfort standards, adapting designs for various age groups, and staying updated with rapidly changing trends. Successful designers address these challenges by collaborating closely with product development teams, staying informed about materials and regulations, and seeking feedback from both children and parents during the design process.

Job description

We’re looking for a talented and imaginative Kids’ Apparel Designer to join our team and help create beautiful, trend-forward clothing for children. This is an exciting opportunity for a designer with a strong point of view, a love of fashion, and a passion for creating special pieces that combine style, comfort, and functionality.

The ideal candidate has extensive experience designing apparel—particularly dresses—and understands how to translate trends into age-appropriate, commercial styles that parents love and kids enjoy wearing.

What You’ll Do

  • Design compelling children’s apparel collections with a focus on dresses and key seasonal styles
  • Develop original concepts, sketches, color palettes, prints, and fabrications
  • Interpret current fashion trends for the children’s market while maintaining a distinctive brand aesthetic
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including product development, technical design, merchandising, and production
  • Select fabrics, trims, details, and silhouettes that balance visual appeal, comfort, quality, and wearability
  • Consider fit, movement, durability, and age appropriateness throughout the design process
  • Manage multiple projects and seasonal deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Participate in fittings, sample reviews, and design revisions from concept through production

What You Bring

  • 8+ years of professional apparel design experience
  • Strong expertise in dress design, ideally within children’s, contemporary, specialty, or occasion apparel
  • A strong understanding of current trends, fabrics, silhouettes, color, and garment construction
  • A portfolio demonstrating thoughtful, innovative, and commercially successful design work
  • The ability to design clothing that feels both aspirational and practical for children
  • Excellent communication, organization, and collaboration skills
  • Comfort working onsite five days per week in the DTLA area
  • A creative, detail-oriented approach and a genuine passion for children’s fashion
