Job description

DESCRIPTION OF JOB:
The Lab Manager is responsible for the operation of the Chemistry laboratories at Edgewood University , including managing the budget, purchasing , maintaining inventories , supervising lab assistants, and overseeing laboratory safety . The Lab Manager reports to the Chair of the Department of Physical, Computation al , and Mathematical Sciences (PCMS) . This is a 10- month position.
Responsibilities:
  • Oversee laboratory equipment, preparation, and stockroom operations and personnel
  • Manage department budget and purchases
  • Maintain laboratory safety and serve as Chemical Hygiene Officer for PCMS and other areas on campus as needed
  • Oversee laboratory and classroom demonstration preparations
  • Hire, train, supervise, and mentor student lab assistants
  • Manage departmental budget, submit invoices, etc.
  • Maintain chemical and equipment inventories
  • Collaborate with facilities and environmental health and safety for maintenance of fume hoods, air handling systems, de-ionized water and other building operations
  • Serve as Chemical Hygiene Officer (CHO) for Edgewood University
  • Serve as Chairperson of the Lab Safety Committee
  • Coordinate sharing of laboratory resources between the University, High School, Campus School, and external institutions as necessary
  • Maintain safety data sheet database management and advise/consult with other departments regarding safety data sheet management
  • Maintain equipment and instrumentation for use in laboratories
  • Facilitate purchasing new equipment and all supplies
  • Ensure a safe laboratory setting for laboratory courses
  • Manage hazardous waste generated by departmental labs and advise/consult with other departments as needed
  • Review undergraduate research proposals
  • Collaborate with outreach activities
  • Participate in continuing education applicable to laboratory safety and other responsibilities

JOB QUALIFICATIONS
Necessary Education or Work Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in chemistry or a related field; Master's degree preferred
  • Minimum of 5 years of Relevant laboratory experience
  • CHO (NRCC) certification or eligibility to take the exam

Required Knowledge and Skills:
  • Laboratory safety as required by the OSHA Laboratory Standard
  • Ability to train and supervise student lab assistants
  • Proper handling and storage of hazardous chemicals and waste
  • Use and maintenance of laboratory equipment and instrumentation
  • Ability to shift priorities and work with frequent interruptions
  • Effective communication skills

Specialized Technology Skills:
  • Overall proficient skill-level in Microsoft Office, which includes: Word, Excel, Power Point, and Outlook
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Teams and Blackboard/Canvas is a plus
  • Willingness and ability to learn new software
