Relevant skills include knowledge of safety procedures, understanding of chemical properties, and experience with mixing equipment; some positions may require certifications in safety or hazardous materials handling.

What are some common challenges chemical mixing operators face during a typical shift?

Chemical Mixing Operators often encounter challenges such as maintaining precise measurements, adhering to strict safety protocols, and troubleshooting unexpected equipment malfunctions. Staying vigilant about quality control and responding quickly to alarms or unusual reactions are crucial aspects of the job. Additionally, operators must carefully document batch information and collaborate closely with quality assurance and maintenance teams to ensure smooth production runs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a chemical mixing operator?

To thrive as a Chemical Mixing Operator, you typically need a high school diploma or equivalent, strong math skills, and a solid understanding of chemical handling and safety procedures. Familiarity with industrial mixing equipment, safety data sheets (SDS), and process control systems is important, and OSHA certification is often preferred. Attention to detail, teamwork, and the ability to follow precise instructions are crucial soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure safe, efficient, and accurate chemical production, minimizing risks and maintaining product quality.

Job description

Electrical Maintenance Specialist, Chemical Manufacturing

Location: Hammond, IN

A day in the role

You start your shift by suiting up with PPE—safety glasses, gloves, steel-toe boots, and hearing protection. When you step into designated production areas, you add a respirator. A production line calls in a fault: you open the control panel, trace a 480V circuit, verify VFD behavior, and check PLC inputs and outputs (no programming required). You spot a misaligned proximity sensor, replace it, and bring the equipment back online. Later, you knock out preventive maintenance on conveyors, mixers, pumps, and electrical distribution gear—documenting work orders and collaborating with operators and fellow techs to keep the plant humming. If a belt, bearing, or chain needs attention, you pitch in on the mechanical side, align components, and keep downtime to a minimum.

Schedule
  • 1st Shift: Monday–Friday | 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM
  • 2nd Shift: Monday–Friday | 3:00 PM – 11:30 PM

Overtime is available based on production needs.

Role focus

This position is heavily electrical: approximately 75–80% of your work centers on electrical troubleshooting, repair, and preventive maintenance. The balance involves assisting with mechanical repairs and adjustments.

What you’ll own
  • Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair production equipment to reduce downtime.
  • Work on 120V, 240V, and 480V systems safely and effectively.
  • Service AC/DC motors, starters, motor controls, overloads, relays, contactors, transformers, disconnects, and control panels.
  • Diagnose and repair Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) and associated motor control systems.
  • Read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, blueprints, and technical manuals.
  • Troubleshoot PLC-controlled equipment by validating I/O, sensors, and components (programming not required).
  • Install, replace, and repair sensors, switches, photo eyes, proximity sensors, wiring, and electrical devices.
  • Perform preventive maintenance to improve reliability and prevent unplanned stops.
  • Support root cause analysis and implement long-term corrective actions.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and complete work orders.
  • Partner with production and maintenance teammates to quickly resolve issues.
Mechanical support you’ll provide
  • Bearings, belts, and chains
  • Rollers and conveyors
  • Gearboxes and pumps
  • Basic hydraulic and pneumatic components
  • Equipment adjustments and alignments
Equipment and systems you’ll support
  • Conveyors, mixers, pumps
  • Industrial motors and gearboxes
  • Electrical control panels
  • PLC-controlled production equipment
  • VFDs, motor starters, relays, contactors
  • Safety circuits and electrical distribution equipment
  • Sensors, photo eyes, and proximity devices
Work environment & safety

You’ll work in a chemical manufacturing facility where safety is paramount. All required PPE is provided, and strict plant safety procedures are followed. The facility produces lead-based specialty products and employs engineered controls and PPE to maintain a safe workplace.

PPE used:

  • Safety glasses
  • Steel-toe boots
  • Gloves
  • Hearing protection
  • Respirator (required while working in designated production areas)
What helps you succeed
  • Industrial electrical maintenance experience in manufacturing environments
  • Comfort with 480V systems
  • Motors and motor controls expertise
  • Hands-on work with VFDs and electrical troubleshooting
  • Ability to read electrical schematics and wiring diagrams
  • Experience supporting PLC-controlled equipment
  • Preventive maintenance mindset and documentation discipline
  • Mechanical troubleshooting in an industrial setting

If you enjoy solving complex electrical issues, collaborating with a skilled team, and building a long-term career with a stable manufacturer that values safety, reliability, and continuous improvement, you’ll feel right at home here.
