Shelter and Crisis Support Specialist --FT, 3-11 pm

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Organizational Overview: The Domestic Violence Shelter’s Mission is to build a peaceful community by providing safety, education, and supportive services while empowering survivors and those affected by domestic violence and sexual assault. The Shelter will provide programs to educate the community about the effects of violence on families and individuals to empower them to help reduce and prevent family violence in our community.

Reports to: Team Lead, Shelter Operations

Status: Full, Rotating weekends

Position Overview

The Shelter and Crisis Support Specialist provides trauma-informed support, advocacy, and case management services to residents of the domestic violence shelter. This role ensures clients have access to resources, safety planning, and emotional support as they work toward stability, safety, and healing.

Key Responsibilities

Client Intake & Assessment

  • Conduct intake assessments for new shelter residents,identifyingimmediate safety concerns and service needs
  • Gather relevant background information, including experiences of violence, support systems, and current service engagement
  • Collaborate with clients to develop individualized service plans
  • Respond to crisis chat line inquiriesin a timely manner

Case Management

  • Provide ongoing case management, including regular check-ins and progress monitoring
  • Connect clients to essential services (housing, legal advocacy, healthcare, counseling, childcare, financial support)
  • Coordinate with community partners to ensuretimelyandappropriate services
  • Transport clients to appointments and services as needed

Crisis Intervention & Support

  • Provide immediate crisis intervention and emotional support
  • Offer trauma-informed, nonjudgmental support in a safe environment
  • Assistclients in developing andmaintainingpersonalized safety plans

Advocacy

  • Advocate for clients’ needs within the shelter and external systems
  • Accompany clients to court, medical, or service appointments as needed
  • Support clients in building self-advocacy skills and informed decision-making

Education & Outreach

  • Assistinfacilitatingworkshops and support groups on topics such as healthy relationships, self-care, and empowerment
  • Support development and distribution of educational materials

Shelter Operations

  • Maintain cleanliness of the facilityin accordance withestablished protocols
  • Answer hotline calls and respond to client needs
  • Engage respectfully and professionally with residents and families
  • Participate in on-call rotation (as trained)
  • Support overall daily shelter operations

Other Duties

  • Performadditionalresponsibilities as assigned by shelter leadership

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in social work, psychology, counseling, or related field (preferred)
  • Experience working with survivors of domestic violence or in a related field
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed care and crisis intervention practices
  • Strong communication, advocacy, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Commitment to confidentiality and ethical practice
