Meridian Charter Schools is a school management organization (SMO) in Chicago, IL that operates three campuses of Chicago International Charter School: CICS Ralph Ellison Academy High School, CICS Northtown Academy High School, and CICS Wrightwood Elementary School. Position Summary:

The High School Athletic Coach leads and manages an interscholastic athletic program aligned to the school’s mission, focusing on student-athlete development, competitive excellence, and strong character at CICS Ralph Ellison Academy.

Please note: This is a seasonal position. The Athletic Coach will serve as an independent contractor and will receive a 1099 form. Compensation is issued as a single lump-sum payment at the conclusion of the season, in the amounts specified in Compensation




Duties and Responsibilities:

Program Leadership: Plan and execute a year-round program encompassing preseason, in-season, postseason, and summer activities. Teach sport fundamentals, prepare student-athletes for competition, and maintain program standards aligned to the school’s mission. Communicate program vision, expectations, and updates to players, families, and school staff.



Student Development: Support the athletic, academic, and personal growth of student-athletes through intentional coaching and mentorship. Ensure fair and transparent team selection processes and encourage multi-sport participation.

Culture and Conduct: Establish and enforce clear standards for discipline, sportsmanship, and student behavior. Model professionalism in all conduct, communications, and appearance as a representative of Meridian Charter Schools.

Operations and Compliance: Maintain compliance with athlete eligibility, medical clearance, and safety protocols prior to and throughout the season. Manage program equipment and submit post-season inventory reports. Adhere to all IHSA, conference, and school policies; attend all required meetings. Report scores and provide program updates as required by school administration.

Community Engagement: Facilitate at least one annual parent/guardian meeting and maintain consistent, proactive communication throughout the season. Actively promote athletics as an integral component of the school’s broader educational program and community identity.



Qualifications
  • Education Level: High School or GED required. Associate or bachelor’s degree preferred.

  • Age Requirement: Minimum age of 19.

  • Experience, Sport Knowledge, and Leadership: Demonstrated knowledge of the sport, strong communication skills, and proven leadership ability. Experience in playing the sport competitively preferred. 

  • IHSA Compliance: Must meet all IHSA coaching requirements, including applicable certification and/or employment criteria.

  • Safety Training: Concussion awareness and CPR certification are strongly preferred prior to the start of the season.

  • Professionalism: Ability to represent Meridian Charter Schools with integrity, maintaining high standards in conduct and community engagement.



Compensation:


This is a seasonal position that is paid as a one-time stipend at the conclusion of the season. As an independent contractor, coaches will receive a 1099 form. Stipend amounts are as follows:

•       Soccer — Head Coach: $6,000 | Assistant Coach: $5,000

•       Girls Basketball — Head Coach: $6,000 | Assistant Coach: $5,000

•       Cross Country — Head Coach: $6,000 | Assistant Coach: $5,000

•       Flag Football — Head Coach: $6,000 | Assistant Coach: $5,000


Benefits are not offered for this position.




Physical Job Requirements:

The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and or pulling; some kneeling, crouching, and significant finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 30% sitting, 40% walking, and 30% standing. This job is performed in a generally clean and climate-controlled environment.
