Delivers timely and effective critical care paramedic level emergency medical care to patients of all ages in both emergency and non-emergency situations, ensuring stabilization and/or resuscitation as needed due to illness or injury. Responds to ambulance calls, follows established system protocols and NIMS standards for scene management, and accurately document all care provided. When available, assists in the Emergency Department by performing advanced airway management, medication administration, and assists with delegated tasks such as assessments, vital signs, IV initiation, ECGs, and documentation, as well as decontamination, cleaning, and restocking of equipment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Patient Care
  • Rapidly assess patients and provide lifesaving care according to protocol.

  • Initiate basicand advancedairwaymanagement.

  • Provide direct patient care in pre-hospital and hospital settings withintheCritical CareParamedicscope of practice, includingthe administration ofapprovedmedications.

  • Provideage-appropriatecare across neonate, infant, child, adolescent, adult, and geriatric populations.

Transport & Operations

  • Operate ambulance safely; transport sick or injured persons while avoiding motions detrimental to patients.

  • Cover on-call hours andstaffspecial events as directed to meet departmental needs.

  • Assistwith scheduling, payroll, andtimekeeping, as needed.

  • Provide shift-to-shift leadership, resolve conflicts, andfacilitatesmooth operations.

Vehicle & Equipment Maintenance

  • Perform daily/weekly vehicle and rig checks;maintain,restockand clean unit after eachrun.

  • Manage EMS inventory;maintainpagers,radiosand other equipment; report discrepancies and maintenance needs.

Documentation & Quality

  • Complete patient care documentation after each call and in the Emergency Department as needed.

  • Participate in peer review and chart audits.

  • Participate in quality monitoring, performance improvement, and evidence-basedpracticeinitiatives.

  • Ensure compliance withregulatoryrequirements andassistwithstate inspections.

Training & Education

  • Complete all required trainingandmaintaincompetencyin required skills,including departmental,site specific, andorganization-wideprograms.

  • Maintain personal training logs and track continuing education hours (CEHs).

  • Assistin orientation of new EMTs,Advanced EMTs, Paramedics, and Critical Care Paramedics; provideeducation to staff and the public as requested.

  • Precept and mentorEMT,Advanced EMT, and Paramedicstudents.

Community Engagement

  • Maintain a professional public image;participatein public relations activities.

  • Support Community Paramedicine program tasks (e.g., medication reconciliation, brief home safety review, patient assessment, red flag education, follow-up coordination, and documentation).

Communication & Teamwork

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Mustpossessa comprehensive understanding of theCritical CareParamedicscope of practice, including all clinical procedures, patient care standards, and legal/regulatory requirements governing emergency medical services. This knowledge should encompass state and local protocols, documentation standards, infection control practices, and the ability to apply these principles effectively in both pre-hospital and hospital settings. Additionally, theLeadParamedicshoulddemonstrateproficiencyin recognizing limitations of the role and collaborating with other healthcare professionals to ensure safe, high-quality patient care.
  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED)required.
  • Graduate of an approved Paramedic course with a current Iowa Paramedic (PM) certification, or an Iowa RN Exemption PHRN certification, based on role. (MercyOneGenesis-currentParamedic (PM) license in either Iowa or Illinois isrequiredat the time ofhire. A secondary EMT license for the other state must be obtained within120 daysof the hire or transferdate.)
  • Iowa Critical Care Paramedic endorsementrequired.
  • 3-5 years of experience in providing emergency carewith the ability to work under pressure whilemaintainingpositive relationships; leadership experience preferred.
  • Maintain a valid driver's license and an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report, meeting all organizationalmotor vehicle safety standards.
  • National Incident Management System (NIMS) - 100 (preferred).
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS)required.
  • American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)required.
  • American Heart AssociationPediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) provider.
  • Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) provider (preferred).
  • AdvanceMedical Life Support (AMLS) provider (preferred).
  • Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter - Child and/or Dependent Adult Abuse training within three (3) months of hire.
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) within 6 months of hire.
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)asapplicable.
  • Emergency Vehicle Operator Course (EVOC) or equivalent within 1 year of hire.
  • Must be comfortable operating in a collaborative, shared leadership environment.
