Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

The Office of Undergraduate Admissions has the privilege and responsibility of being the primary point of contact for students seeking admission to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as undergraduates. In its role evaluating first-year and transfer students, the office works tirelessly to identify, recruit, admit, and welcome students who will positively contribute to our campus, state, and nation. The office also supports students by providing academic counseling, sponsors hundreds of events encouraging students to further their education, and works to enhance the image of the University locally and nationally. Members of the office understand that their work is intensely public and is closely followed by students and their families; secondary-school teachers and administrators; University faculty and staff; lawmakers; and media.

Position Summary

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks a creative, committed, and collaborative professional to serve as Assistant Director in the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. This admissions officer will counsel students, parents, and school and community colleagues about how students may explore whether Carolina will be a good match for their talents and aspirations, apply for admission and student aid, and thrive once enrolled. In addition to representing the University at on- and off-campus events, the assistant director will collaborate with colleagues in admissions and other campus departments to develop and implement innovative methods of recruiting students whose talent, temperament, and perspective of thought and experience will contribute to the education of everyone in the UNC community and help the University achieve its mission.

The successful candidate will demonstrate an outstanding ability to plan, lead, and collaborate with others; think critically and strategically; care for students, families, and other constituents; identify and assess opportunities to recruit students and form partnerships; provide comprehensive and individual evaluation of student credentials within a highly competitive pool; and speak and write clearly and persuasively. The successful candidate will also demonstrate a strong commitment to Carolina's mission, a keen interest in the identification and recruitment of a talented student body, and an ability to work effectively with colleagues who have many backgrounds and perspectives.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent educational or instructional activities associated with the delivery and/or management of student support functions, will accept a relevant Bachelor's degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and at least 1 year of relevant experience in substitution.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

Strong interpersonal, organizational, and analytical skills. Requires critical thinking, sound judgment, creativity, and a passion to help students overcome obstacles and realize their college-going potential. Strong writing, public speaking, and presentation skills. Ability to work with both students and adults in a professional and courteous manner. An interest in engaging in both admissions review and recruitment activities within their respective seasons, understanding there are months focused heavily on travel and months focused heavily on application review.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

One to two years of experience in admissions, recruitment, student aid, college access, education, or a related field are preferred. Proficiency in a second language, especially Spanish or Mandarin, is preferred.

Special Physical/Mental Requirements Campus Security Authority Responsibilities

This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. This position will be required to report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual training about reporting responsibilities.
