What Is the Job of a CFP Professional?

A certified financial planner (CFP) works with clients to help manage personal finances and realize short and long term financial goals. As a CFP, you often work with individuals, but you may also advise companies and small businesses. Your duties include offering advice about savings and investments, helping clients budget for major expenses such as a college education or home purchase, and providing strategies to improve the management of their assets and cash flow. In addition to investing and budgeting advice, you also sell financial products such as insurance and investments.

How much money can a CFP make?

Certified Financial Planners (CFPs) typically earn a median annual salary of around $89,000, with experienced professionals earning over $150,000. Salaries vary based on location, experience, and the size of the firm, and CFPs often work in financial planning, investment advising, or wealth management roles that require passing the CFP certification exam and maintaining ongoing education.

Which pays more, CFP or CPA?

Generally, Certified Public Accountants (CPAs) tend to have higher average salaries than Certified Financial Planners (CFPs), especially in accounting, auditing, and tax roles. However, salary differences can vary based on experience, location, and industry, with CFPS often earning more in financial planning and advisory positions. Both certifications can lead to lucrative careers, but CPAs typically command higher pay in traditional accounting roles.

How do Certified Financial Planners (CFPs) typically build long-term client relationships and trust?

Certified Financial Planners (CFPs) build long-term client relationships by consistently providing personalized financial advice, maintaining transparent communication, and demonstrating reliability and ethical standards. They schedule regular check-ins to review clients' financial goals, adjust plans as needed, and proactively address changes in financial markets or regulations. Establishing trust also involves confidentiality, clear documentation, and ongoing education to help clients make informed decisions, which ultimately fosters loyalty and referrals.

What are CFPs?

CFP stands for Certified Financial Planner, a professional designation for financial advisors who have met rigorous education, examination, experience, and ethical requirements set by the CFP Board. CFPs help individuals and families create comprehensive financial plans, covering areas such as investments, retirement, taxes, estate planning, and insurance. They are held to a fiduciary standard, meaning they must act in their clients’ best interests when providing financial advice.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Certified Financial Planner (CFP), and why are they important?

To thrive as a Certified Financial Planner (CFP), you need in-depth knowledge of financial planning, investment strategies, and tax regulations, underpinned by a bachelor's degree and CFP certification. Familiarity with financial planning software, CRM systems, and portfolio management tools is commonly required. Excellent interpersonal skills, ethical judgment, and the ability to communicate complex information clearly help set top CFPs apart. These skills and qualities ensure clients receive sound, personalized advice and foster long-term trust and compliance with regulatory standards.

How many financial advisors make $500,000 a year?

While a small percentage of financial advisors earn $500,000 or more annually, those reaching this level typically have extensive experience, strong client bases, and often hold certifications like the CFP. High earnings are more common among top-performing advisors in large firms or with high-net-worth clients.

What jobs does a CFP get you?

A Certified Financial Planner (CFP) typically works as a financial advisor, helping clients with investment planning, retirement, estate planning, and risk management. CFPs often work in financial services firms, banks, or independently, and must pass the CFP exam and meet experience requirements to provide comprehensive financial advice.

Financial Advisor, CFP Professional
Department: Financial Advisory
Employment Type: Full Time
Location: Remote
Reporting To: Principal & CEO
Compensation: $85,000 - $100,000 / year
Description
We are seeking an experienced, client-focused Financial Advisor to serve as the lead relationship manager and primary decision partner for the firm's clients. Operating within a structured pod model alongside a Client Service Associate, this individual will focus exclusively on advice, communication, and decision-marking - delivering a consistent, high-quality planning experience within a defined system and cadence.
This role is best suited for a CFP professional who brings both technical depth and exceptional interpersonal skill - someone who can translate complex financial strategies into clear, confident guidance and who takes genuine ownership of client outcomes and relationships.
Key Responsibilities
Serve as the trusted lead advisor for up to approximately 120 HNW client households - delivering clear, prioritized financial guidance, leading all client-facing engagements, and ensuring every client feels informed, supported, and confident in their financial direction.
1. Client Relationship Management
  • Serve as the primary point of contact and trusted advisor for an assigned book of up to ~120 client households
  • Lead all client meetings, reviews, and planning conversations with clarity and confidence
  • Maintain proactive, consistent communication to ensure clients remain engaged and informed
  • Foster long-term relationships built on trust, responsiveness, and demonstrated value

2. Financial Planning & Advisory Delivery
  • Interpret and refine planning outputs generated within the firm's structured planning system
  • Deliver prioritized, actionable financial guidance across:
    • Investment strategy and portfolio positioning
    • Tax-aware planning and optimization
    • Retirement income and accumulation planning
    • Risk management and insurance review
    • Estate planning fundamentals
  • Communicate complex strategies in a manner that is clear, accessible, and meaningful to each client

3. Internal Coordination & Execution
  • Collaborate closely with the Financial Planning Associate and Investment Operations Associate to ensure seamless execution of client deliverables
  • Delegate appropriately within the pod structure while maintaining accountability for overall client experience
  • Ensure all planning outputs, action items, and follow-throughs are completed accurately and on time

4. Firm Growth & Professional Representation
  • Uphold the firm's standards of excellence in every client interaction and external engagement
  • Participate in firm initiatives, process improvements, and team development as appropriate

Success in this role is measured by the quality and longevity of client relationships. Key performance indicators include:
  • Client retention and renewal rates
  • Client engagement levels and meeting participation
  • Responsiveness and follow-through on client commitments
  • Overall client confidence and satisfaction in the advisory relationship
  • Contribution to firm growth through referrals and professional representation

Qualification & Required Experience
Required
  • Active Series 65/66 or equivalent advisory license
  • 3+ years of client-facing financial planning & advisory experience
  • All licenses and designations must be valid and in good standing
  • Strong technical knowledge across investments, tax-aware planning, retirement, risk management, and estate fundamentals
  • Demonstrated ability to manage client relationships independently and with confidence

Preferred
  • CFP® designation (or actively in progress)
  • Experience working within a team-based or pod advisory model
  • Familiarity with structured financial planning systems and client engagement cadences
  • Track record of strong client retention and satisfaction

Skills & Attributes
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills - able to simplify complexity without losing substance
  • High emotional intelligence and genuine care for client wellbeing
  • Strong organizational discipline and ability to manage a large, active client book
  • Proactive, ownership-driven mindset with a bias toward follow-through
  • Collaborative team player who operates effectively within a structured pod model
  • Discretion and professionalism in handling sensitive financial and personal client matters
  • Comfortable operating in a high-accountability, results-oriented environment

Benefits
  • Work from home
  • Medical, dental, vision, life and voluntary life insurance
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Paid vacation and sick days
  • Paid holidays
  • Potential for bonus of up to 20% of base compensation annually, tied to client outcomes and relationship metrics
  • Unlimited upside through AUM-based and insurance revenue participation - compensation scales directly with client outcomes, relationships longevity, and overall firm growth
