What is a remote CFP?

Remote CFPs are Certified Financial Planners who provide financial planning services to clients virtually, rather than meeting in person. They use technology such as video conferencing, secure messaging, and online financial tools to advise clients on investments, retirement, taxes, and other financial matters. This remote model offers flexibility and convenience for both the planner and the client, allowing access to expert advice regardless of location. Remote CFPs must still meet the same rigorous certification and ethical standards as traditional CFPs.

How can I get a remote job as a CFP?

The primary qualifications for getting a remote job as a CFP are your CFP license and several years of experience in this field. The license itself is offered exclusively through the CFP Board, which manages the certification process and requires all applicants to meet benchmarks for education, examinations, experience, and ethics. The ethics process involves a rigorous background check, though problems in your past do not necessarily bar you from obtaining certification. Fulfilling the responsibilities and duties of a remote CFP job requires math skills, communication skills, good hearing, flexibility, reliable access to high-speed internet, and creativity when helping clients overcome their unique challenges.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote CFP, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote CFP, you need a solid background in financial planning, investment strategies, and regulatory compliance, typically supported by a CFP certification and relevant finance degree. Familiarity with financial planning software (like eMoney or MoneyGuidePro), secure communication platforms, and CRM tools is essential. Strong interpersonal skills, self-motivation, and clear virtual communication distinguish outstanding professionals in this role. These capabilities are crucial for delivering trustworthy advice, building client relationships, and efficiently managing tasks in a remote environment.

How do remote CFPs typically build and maintain client relationships without in-person meetings?

Remote Certified Financial Planners (CFPs) leverage digital communication tools like video conferencing, secure messaging, and collaborative financial planning software to connect with clients. Building trust remotely can be challenging, so clear communication, timely follow-ups, and personalized financial advice are essential. Many remote CFPs schedule regular virtual check-ins and use interactive dashboards to keep clients engaged and informed about their financial plans. This approach allows for flexibility and accessibility, while still fostering strong, long-term client relationships.

Job description

Financial Advisor, CFP Professional
Department: Financial Advisory
Employment Type: Full Time
Location: Remote
Reporting To: Principal & CEO
Compensation: $85,000 - $100,000 / year
Description
We are seeking an experienced, client-focused Financial Advisor to serve as the lead relationship manager and primary decision partner for the firm's clients. Operating within a structured pod model alongside a Client Service Associate, this individual will focus exclusively on advice, communication, and decision-marking - delivering a consistent, high-quality planning experience within a defined system and cadence.
This role is best suited for a CFP professional who brings both technical depth and exceptional interpersonal skill - someone who can translate complex financial strategies into clear, confident guidance and who takes genuine ownership of client outcomes and relationships.
Key Responsibilities
Serve as the trusted lead advisor for up to approximately 120 HNW client households - delivering clear, prioritized financial guidance, leading all client-facing engagements, and ensuring every client feels informed, supported, and confident in their financial direction.
1. Client Relationship Management
  • Serve as the primary point of contact and trusted advisor for an assigned book of up to ~120 client households
  • Lead all client meetings, reviews, and planning conversations with clarity and confidence
  • Maintain proactive, consistent communication to ensure clients remain engaged and informed
  • Foster long-term relationships built on trust, responsiveness, and demonstrated value

2. Financial Planning & Advisory Delivery
  • Interpret and refine planning outputs generated within the firm's structured planning system
  • Deliver prioritized, actionable financial guidance across:
    • Investment strategy and portfolio positioning
    • Tax-aware planning and optimization
    • Retirement income and accumulation planning
    • Risk management and insurance review
    • Estate planning fundamentals
  • Communicate complex strategies in a manner that is clear, accessible, and meaningful to each client

3. Internal Coordination & Execution
  • Collaborate closely with the Financial Planning Associate and Investment Operations Associate to ensure seamless execution of client deliverables
  • Delegate appropriately within the pod structure while maintaining accountability for overall client experience
  • Ensure all planning outputs, action items, and follow-throughs are completed accurately and on time

4. Firm Growth & Professional Representation
  • Uphold the firm's standards of excellence in every client interaction and external engagement
  • Participate in firm initiatives, process improvements, and team development as appropriate

Success in this role is measured by the quality and longevity of client relationships. Key performance indicators include:
  • Client retention and renewal rates
  • Client engagement levels and meeting participation
  • Responsiveness and follow-through on client commitments
  • Overall client confidence and satisfaction in the advisory relationship
  • Contribution to firm growth through referrals and professional representation

Qualification & Required Experience
Required
  • Active Series 65/66 or equivalent advisory license
  • 3+ years of client-facing financial planning & advisory experience
  • All licenses and designations must be valid and in good standing
  • Strong technical knowledge across investments, tax-aware planning, retirement, risk management, and estate fundamentals
  • Demonstrated ability to manage client relationships independently and with confidence

Preferred
  • CFP® designation (or actively in progress)
  • Experience working within a team-based or pod advisory model
  • Familiarity with structured financial planning systems and client engagement cadences
  • Track record of strong client retention and satisfaction

Skills & Attributes
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills - able to simplify complexity without losing substance
  • High emotional intelligence and genuine care for client wellbeing
  • Strong organizational discipline and ability to manage a large, active client book
  • Proactive, ownership-driven mindset with a bias toward follow-through
  • Collaborative team player who operates effectively within a structured pod model
  • Discretion and professionalism in handling sensitive financial and personal client matters
  • Comfortable operating in a high-accountability, results-oriented environment

Benefits
  • Work from home
  • Medical, dental, vision, life and voluntary life insurance
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Paid vacation and sick days
  • Paid holidays
  • Potential for bonus of up to 20% of base compensation annually, tied to client outcomes and relationship metrics
  • Unlimited upside through AUM-based and insurance revenue participation - compensation scales directly with client outcomes, relationships longevity, and overall firm growth
