Job Summary: Working primarily independently with direction from the manager while referring appropriately to the manager, the senior application system analyst is responsible for the implementation, enhancement and support of business, clinical or financial applications deployed throughout the system, following standard departmental processes, especially change control and use of the issue/request tracking system.  The system analyst should exhibit customer service skills necessary to provide ongoing telephone support for end users.

Technical skills:

  • Deep understanding of the Athena/IDX professional billing system, including charge capture, claims processing, reimbursement workflows, working with outside vendors (vendor management), and payment posting.
  • Strong understanding of Athena/IDX database management system (DBMS), including data structures, tables, and system configuration.
  • Proficiency in SQL and data extraction tools for reporting and analysis.
  • Familiarity with integration between Cerner Millennium (registration, scheduling, clinical systems, and facility billing) and Athena/IDX professional billing workflows.
  • Understanding of revenue cycle workflows across both facility (Cerner Millennium) and professional billing (Athena/IDX) environments.
  • Ability to troubleshoot Athena/IDX applications, resolve system issues, and optimize financial and operational workflows.
  • Knowledge of interface development and integration (HL7, APIs, flat files) with third-party systems.
  • Experience with reporting tools and data analysis to support operational and financial decision-making.
  • AES programming experience (Athena Enterprise System) is a plus.

Healthcare Revenue Cycle & Compliance

  • In-depth understanding of physician (professional) billing, charge capture, payment reconciliation, claims adjudication, and denial management.
  • Strong understanding of end-to-end revenue cycle workflows, including alignment between Athena/IDX professional billing and Cerner Millennium facility billing.
  • Familiarity with Maryland regulations, Health Services Cost Review Commission (HSCRC).
  • Knowledge of HIPAA, Medicare/Medicaid, payer regulations, ICD-10, CPT coding, and other healthcare compliance standards.
  • Understanding of reimbursement methodologies and denial prevention strategies across professional billing.
  • Familiarity with hospital billing workflows and integration points is a plus.
  • Familiarity with Epic, Meditech, or other EHR revenue cycle systems is a plus.

Leadership

  • Experience in leading implementations, system upgrades, and optimizations within Athena/IDX or similar professional billing systems.
  • Ability to manage cross-functional teams, working with finance, IT, clinical departments, and revenue cycle stakeholders (PDI, PFS, Charge Services).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to optimize revenue cycle workflows and financial reporting.
  • Effective communication and documentation skills, with the ability to train end-users and stakeholders.
  • Ability to work closely with teams supporting Cerner Millennium to ensure alignment across systems and workflows.
  • Experience with project management methodologies (Agile, Waterfall, PMP preferred).

Certifications – Preferred, but not required

  • Relevant certifications in healthcare IT, Athena/IDX, database management, or revenue cycle systems.
  • SQL or data analytics certifications are a plus.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) or equivalent is a plus.
