Summary
This position is located in the at the Southern Arizona VA medical Center in Engineering Service. The primary purpose of the position is to perform at journeymen level a variety of woodcrafters, carpentry, metal framing, ceiling installations, flooring installation, installing doors, door hardware, windows, window frames and concrete repairs.

Help
Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Journey level duties associated with a variety of tasks using wood, metal, concrete, and various composite materials to install or replace interior partitions, flooring, panels, and suspended ceilings.
  • Interpret drawings, blueprints, and specifications, and determine the layout and work sequences and types of lumber, metal or special related materials needed to perform each project.
  • Make job site surveys and recommendations on best practices to complete assigned task and determining type/ quantity of best-suited materials to be used.
  • Construct, maintain, repair, and alter the interior and exterior structures built from concrete block, ceramic tiles.
  • Install, maintain, and repair various types of wall and flooring designed of ceramic tile, vinyl planking, vinyl composite tile, rolled vinyl, epoxy material and composite sheeting.
  • Level surface, estimate material and finish surface using grout, silicone material and welded rod joints.
  • Use tools and power equipment such as saws, power saws, skill saws, scaffolding planers, core drills, laser levels, precision measure devices, power drills, routers, metal power shears, milling tools, jack hammers, and wood door preparation kits.
  • Maintain tools and equipment.
  • Construct and repair structural items such and building frames, rafters, concrete pathways, flooring and ceiling construction.
  • Paint interiors and exteriors of buildings and/ or stationary mobile equipment; prepare surface, mix paint and apply primer; determine special paint types based on environment to include: office space, pharmacies, storage areas and operating and exam rooms.
  • Repair leaky roofs; remove defective roofing to preclude damage to subsurface and ensure area is properly prepared for new roofing; trace leaks.

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

Qualifications

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.
SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements:

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: May handle or carry weights up to 50 pounds, and occasionally more with assistance from other employees. Assistance is usually available for handling of heavier material and equipment. Heavy exertion is required at frequent intervals. Work requires pushing, pulling, lifting, reaching, walking, climbing, stooping, ability for normal mental and muscular coordination simultaneously, normal hearing and vision. Must have physical capabilities for working inside and outside in excessive heat and cold, noise, confined areas, inclement weather and on intermittent slippery or uneven surfaces that can be found at or in transit to or from work sites. May receive minor cuts and abrasions while performing these duties. Must be able to work from ladders and platforms, and work in awkward and uncomfortable positions.
Working conditions: Incumbent may be assigned to work in areas/confined spaces where certain potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present. To ensure employee safety and health, personnel protections programs are maintained consistent with applicable laws and regulations. Incumbent will be required to wear respirators and must be physically able to perform assigned work tasks as directed above and operate safety shoes, safety glasses, respirators, protective clothing and hard hats. Incumbent will work a regular tour of duty, may work overtime, nights and weekends.
