Cemetery Groundskeeper – Job Description

Position Title: Cemetery Groundskeeper
Reports To: Cemetery Manager

Position Summary
The Cemetery Groundskeeper is responsible for maintaining the appearance, cleanliness, safety, and overall condition of cemetery grounds. This position performs general grounds maintenance, burial site preparation, equipment operation, and property upkeep while ensuring the cemetery provides a respectful and peaceful environment for families and visitors.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain cemetery grounds, and general property upkeep.
  • Prepare gravesites for interments and restore grounds following services.
  • Install and remove tents, chairs, lowering devices, and other equipment for funeral services.
  • Operate and maintain cemetery equipment, including mowers, tractors, backhoes, utility vehicles, and other grounds maintenance tools.
  • Perform routine maintenance on cemetery roads, fences, signs, drainage systems, and other property features.
  • Assist with setting, leveling, and maintaining memorials and markers as assigned.
  • Remove litter, debris, snow, and ice to maintain a safe and respectful environment.
  • Assist with seasonal property maintenance and improvement projects.
  • Ensure all equipment is operated safely and maintained in good working condition.
  • Interact professionally and respectfully with families, visitors, funeral directors, and coworkers.
  • Follow all company safety policies and applicable OSHA requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Cemetery Manager.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Previous experience in cemetery operations, grounds maintenance, construction, equipment operation, or a related field preferred.
  • Ability to safely operate commercial equipment.
  • Ability to lift up to 75 pounds and perform physically demanding outdoor work in all weather conditions.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Strong work ethic, reliability, and attention to detail.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, lifting, and operating equipment.
  • Ability to work outdoors year-round in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to safely perform strenuous physical labor.
