Cemetery Groundskeeper
Location: Lansing, Michigan
Position Type: Full-Time
Schedule: Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with occasional Saturday work as needed
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Join Our Team
We are seeking a dedicated and hardworking Cemetery Groundskeeper to help maintain the beauty, safety, and dignity of our cemetery grounds. This position plays an important role in supporting burial services and ensuring that families experience a well-maintained and respectful environment when visiting loved ones.
The ideal candidate enjoys working outdoors, takes pride in maintaining attractive landscapes, and is comfortable operating equipment and performing physically demanding work. Successful candidates will demonstrate: Strong work ethic and reliability; Ability to work independently and as part of a team; Attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship; Respectful and compassionate customer service skills; and Ability to safely operate equipment and perform physical labor.
Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare gravesites and assist with burial and entombment services.
  • Open and close graves, niches, and crypts.
  • Install vaults, concrete crypts, urns, markers, crypt bars, and niche bars.
  • Mow, trim, prune, seed, fertilize, and maintain cemetery lawns and landscaping.
  • Apply pesticides and herbicides in accordance with established procedures.
  • Operate and maintain lawn care and earth-moving equipment.
  • Monitor sprinkler systems and coordinate equipment repairs as needed.
  • Clean and maintain mausoleums, statues, vehicles, and equipment.
  • Maintain a safe and organized shop and work area.
  • Assist visitors with locating gravesites.
  • Purchase supplies in accordance with established procedures.
  • Support accurate recordkeeping and follow all cemetery operating procedures.
  • Adhere to all safety policies and promptly report safety concerns to supervisors.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Some high school education required.
  • At least six months of groundskeeping, landscaping, or related outdoor maintenance experience.
  • Experience operating lawn and garden equipment is helpful.
  • Valid driver's license required for employees operating cemetery vehicles.
  • Must be able to successfully complete a driving history background check if operating a cemetery vehicle.
  • Must complete a criminal history background check.
Physical Requirements
This position requires regular outdoor work in varying weather conditions and includes:
  • Standing and walking for extended periods.
  • Regularly lifting and moving up to 50 pounds.
  • Frequently lifting and moving up to 100 pounds.
  • Climbing ladders, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, and reaching.
  • Working occasional weekends as necessary.
