Purpose
This position is responsible for performing landscape maintenance for assigned areas throughout the five city owned cemeteries. This includes Bonaventure, colonial Park, Greenwich, Laurel Grove North, and Laurel Grove South Cemeteries.

Essential Job Functions
  • Maintains city facilities and landscapes in the five city owned cemeteries landscaping.
  • Fertilizes shrubs, trees, flowers, plants, bulbs, and turf.
  • Applies pesticides as necessary.
  • Plants and maintains flower beds; designs the layout of beds.
  • Installs and repairs irrigation systems.
  • Prunes shrubs, edges beds, eliminates wild growth and weeds, and adds mulch as needed.
  • Proposes and carries out corrective landscape work.
  • Works with crew to perform landscape renovations and install new landscaping.
  • Conducts in-house training of crew members.
  • Ensures that grass is cut and maintained.
  • Assists other crews as needed.
  • Clears organic debris and weeds from cemetery architecture.
  • Trains personnel in the care of cemetery landscaping.
  • Assists with burial operations, including measuring and diagramming lots, and opening and closing graves.
  • Cleans cemetery facilities as needed.
  • Assists customers by providing information and directions.
  • Performs after-hour on call duties for funerals, and emergency situations as assigned.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Requires High school diploma or GED plus additional vocational training in turf maintenance or landscape maintenance; with two (2) years of experience in landscape maintenance; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Requires a Georgia Pesticide Applicator License with Ornamental and Turf endorsements or obtain certifications within (12) months of employment.
Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license with an acceptable driving history.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES: Guidelines include department rules and regulations, the city code of conduct, and department work standards. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY: The work consists of related duties in the installation and maintenance of cemetery landscaping. Inclement weather conditions contribute to the complexity of the position.
SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to install and maintain cemetery landscaping. Successful performance in this position results in safe, attractive, well maintained cemeteries and in the efficient and effective delivery of customer services.
PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with co-workers, other city employees, customers, visitors, funeral directors, representatives of monument companies, religious leaders, and members of the general public.
PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, provide services, and resolve problems.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed while standing, stooping, walking, bending, or crouching. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and distinguishes between shades of color.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is typically performed outdoors. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, irritating chemicals, and occasional cold or inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY: This position may have functional leadership over an assigned crew of personnel.
