How much do cell engineer jobs pay per year?

As of May 31, 2026, the average yearly pay for cell engineer in the United States is $87,505.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $56,000.00 and $111,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Cell Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Cell Engineer, you need a solid background in chemical engineering, materials science, or a related field, along with experience in battery cell design and manufacturing. Familiarity with battery management systems (BMS), CAD tools, and laboratory testing equipment is typically required, and certifications in battery technology or Six Sigma can be advantageous. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective teamwork skills distinguish top performers in this role. These competencies are essential for developing innovative, reliable, and safe energy storage solutions in a highly competitive industry.

What are common challenges faced by Cell Engineers when scaling up battery prototypes to mass production?

Cell Engineers often encounter challenges related to maintaining performance consistency and quality control as battery prototypes move to mass production. These issues can include variations in raw materials, process deviations, and difficulties in ensuring uniformity across large production batches. To address these challenges, Cell Engineers work closely with manufacturing teams, implement rigorous testing protocols, and continuously refine production processes. Collaboration across R&D, quality assurance, and manufacturing departments is key to successfully scaling up while meeting industry standards.

What are Cell Engineers?

Cell Engineers are professionals who design, develop, and optimize battery cells, typically for use in electric vehicles, consumer electronics, or energy storage systems. They focus on improving cell performance, safety, and longevity by working with materials, chemistry, and manufacturing processes. Cell Engineers may also be involved in testing, troubleshooting, and scaling up production of battery cells to meet industry standards and requirements.

What is the difference between Cell Engineer vs Battery Engineer?

AspectCell EngineerBattery Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or related fieldsBachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related fields
Work EnvironmentLaboratories, R&D facilities, manufacturing plantsDesign labs, testing facilities, manufacturing environments
Industry UsagePrimarily in battery manufacturing, electric vehicle, and energy storage sectorsBroader, including battery design, system integration, and energy storage solutions

While both roles focus on batteries, a Cell Engineer specializes in developing and optimizing individual battery cells, whereas a Battery Engineer works on entire battery systems, including design, integration, and performance. The roles often overlap but differ in scope and focus.

  • Collaborate with data engineers to process data, maintain cell testing database and develop automated data post-processing and report generation scripts.
  • Analyze and present test results to cell engineers and scientists and support cross functional teams with test report if needed.
  • Contribute to automating the entire testing process from test requests to delivery of test results report.
  • Work closely with test engineers and technicians to plan and execute long/medium/short-term priorities.
  • Develop and implement lab KPIs, using scripts, to analyze lab operation and improve productivity.
  • Design test fixture to improve testing capability and accuracy and extract representative and meaningful data.
