Purpose
As a member of the Trinity Health Senior Leadership Team, the SVP, Chief Clinical Officer (CCO) serves as an enterprise clinical leader responsible for advancing high-quality, safe, and equitable care across the continuum.
Reporting to the EVP and Chief Operating Officer (COO), the CCO drives clinical excellence through strong relationships with clinicians and leaders across the system. In close partnership with operations leadership, the CCO advances system performance through clinical strategy, physician alignment, care model transformation, and expansion of care delivery into community-based settings. The role ensures consistent clinical standards, optimizes outcomes, and enables innovation, informatics, and sustainable growth across a complex, multi-site health system.

Essential Functions
Enterprise Clinical Strategy & Performance
Leads development and execution of the enterprise clinical strategy in alignment with system goals and operational priorities.
Partners with the COO and executive team to drive balanced performance across quality, safety, patient experience, access, and reducing the total cost of care.
Establishes system-wide clinical standards, priorities, and performance targets, ensuring alignment across Regional Health Ministries (RHMs) and care settings.
Drives a high reliability culture focused on safety, continuous improvement, and measurable outcomes.
Serves as a key leader in shaping enterprise care delivery strategy, including the expansion of community-based services (e.g., ambulatory surgery centers, retail pharmacy, and other access points), including the strategic transition of some hospital-based care into new settings.
Works within a matrixed leadership model to ensure coordinated, efficient growth across the continuum, including the appropriate transition of care from hospital-based to lower-cost, patient-centered settings.
Develops and implements structures, governance, and operating models that enable scalable growth and performance, including physician alignment and engagement strategies.
Quality, Safety & Clinical Outcomes
Accountable for system-wide clinical quality, patient safety, and outcomes improvement.
Oversees development and monitoring of leading and lagging clinical indicators, ensuring transparency and accountability.

Experience & Education
A M.D. or D.O. is required. Master's in Business Administration (MBA) or Master's in Medical Management (MMM) is strongly preferred.
Must have an unrestricted M.D./D.O. license in the State of Michigan or another state where clinical practice has occurred, and currently eligible for a Michigan administrative license. Broad experience in all aspects of clinical practice including hospital, outpatient office/clinic, critical, and emergency care is required.
Substantive clinical practice experience and significant senior executive experience in a large, complex, nationally known, integrated health system required. Typically, this experience is gained through a minimum of fifteen (15+) years of experience.
Must be able to lead clinical care teams and/or physician groups, including group facilitation, leadership development, team building, and performance management while driving cultural and other change management initiatives. This includes the proven ability to create clinical staff organizational improvements and restructuring; as well as managing clinician-organizational conflict. Must be able to influence clinician behaviors through engagement efforts.
Through the use of informatics, must be able to establish, pursue and monitor appropriate process and outcome measures for key initiatives using a systems perspective; evaluating the processes by which clinical care and patient services are delivered; identifying areas of opportunity; setting standards for outcomes; developing appropriate systems to monitor outcomes; and overseeing the implementation of process improvements.
Other ideal experiences include being a leader in the development of new clinical services which provide multi-disciplinary care; leading health systems in pay-for-performance initiatives; leading the conceptualization and implementation of clinical improvement activities in both the acute and outpatient spaces as well as integrating these programs across the continuum; and leading the horizontal leadership of process improvement.
Assessing and assimilating industry trends and predicting the futuristic relevance and applicability of innovative industry trends is highly desirable.
