Overview
The Senior Plate Structures Engineer may be recognized as subject matter expert within CB&I Storage Solutions for one or more technologies or product lines and may serve as CB&I Storage Solutions industry representative through code committee work or participation in communities of practice. The role is responsible for performing or checking design and analysis of assigned deliverables on a CB&I Storage Solutions project associated with a plate structures product line such as tanks, vessels, structures, modules, foundations, and other site facilities. The work includes among other things, conceptual studies, cost and planning studies, layouts, design calculations, specification development and construction documents. Senior Plate Structures Engineer is expected to work independently with minimal supervision and may be responsible to train or supervise the work of less experienced engineers on specific tasks. The role reports to the Department or Design Manager and routinely interacts with other Plate Structures Engineers, Plate Structures Designers, Project Engineers and Managers.
Responsibilities
  • Accurately produce assigned deliverables per applicable design code, company standards and customer drawings and specifications.
  • Adhering to regulations and bylaws of local professional engineering jurisdictions and code of ethics in protection of the public and the environment.
  • Ensure designs and details are safe for field erection and use, with constructability in mind.
  • Reliably check and sign off on design calculations, specifications and other deliverables for customer approval or project use per applicable design code, company standards and customer drawings and specifications.
  • Compare designs and details to as-sold estimate and customer documents and advise project team of discrepancies and potential change notices.
  • Run programs to produce and check design calculations in designated software.
  • Coordinate with other roles and functions on project team.
  • Forecast how long it will take to do a task - commit to definitive deadlines.
  • Provide mentoring and knowledge transfer to less experienced plate structures engineers.
  • Make decisions on project-specific details and advise project team.
  • Generate improvement ideas for tools and workflow associated to the role.
  • May include maintaining professional license in at least one jurisdiction, and approving and stamping project deliverables as needed.
  • Effectively use document management system.

Local Requirements
  • Perform and check structural or mechanical design and analysis for tanks, vessels, modules, foundations, and other CB&I industrial structures.
  • Prepare design calculations, specifications, layouts, construction documents, and cost/engineering studies.
  • Ensure all designs meet applicable codes (AISC, ASCE, IBC, ACI, API 650, API 620, ASME Section VIII) and CB&I standards.
  • Evaluate constructability and ensure safe, practical solutions for field erection.
  • Review and approve deliverables as a licensed Professional Engineer, including stamping where required.
  • Identify discrepancies against customer specifications or project estimates and advise project teams.
  • Coordinate closely with project engineers, CAD designers, project managers, and other stakeholders.
  • Utilize engineering software to run and verify structural/mechanical analyses.
  • Proactively identify improvements to tools, workflows, and engineering processes.
  • Supervise and mentor junior engineers, with opportunities to grow into a formal leadership role.
  • Senior Design Engineer with 5-10 years of experience in industrial structural design- specifically structures such as steel plate tanks, pressure vessels, large foundations, and modular systems.
  • Structural Engineering background preferred
  • Experienced Mechanical Engineer with a PE license supporting similar industrial structures

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Structural, Civil, or Mechanical Engineering (Structural preferred).
  • PE license required (Structural SE strongly preferred; Civil and Mechanical PE accepted).
  • 5-10 years of design experience in structures with a focus on industrial or heavy -industry structures, preferably EPC or design build- environments.
  • Experience with API 650 / API 620 / ASME VIII and relevant structural codes.
  • Strong analytical skills, communication abilities, and business professionalism.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and collaborate across teams.
