Job description

Job Summary
The Assistant Cattle Manager will work closely with the Cattle Manager to prioritize and delegate feedyard work requirements.
The Assistant Cattle Manager, under the guidance of the Cattle Manager, will direct, supervise and coordinate daily activities at the Feedyard including employee supervision, posting research data, maintaining herd health programs and coordinating daily work and research activities of part-time employees.
Responsibilities and Duties
  • Maintain communication with cattle manager regarding cattle handling and care
  • Support, coordinate and direct supervision of all cattle handling crews
  • Perform discretionary decisions in the Cattle Manager's absence
  • Distinguish and identify cattle as to quality, health, or at risk
  • Aware of cattle nutritional and health knowledge
  • Sort and order cattle per manager's specifications and requirements
  • Receiving or rejection of cattle
  • Perform proper documentation of all cattle received
  • Help schedule and place all feedyard staff and coordinate their activities
  • Assist with maintaining proper health care supplies
  • Establish proper cattle care crews
  • Perform maintenance of all cattle care facilities
  • Manage cattle sorting and classification
  • Maintain accurate inventory of cattle in home pens, hospital pens, etc.
  • Manage maintenance of medicine inventories
  • Facilitate movements of cattle across the feedyard
  • Run or approve any clearance reports on all pens to be shipped
  • Structure and maintain an efficient feedyard schedule
  • Manage and support a continual observance and enforcement of safety policies and procedures

Qualifications and Skills
  • High School Diploma, GED or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Class A CDL license (or must be able to obtain within 60 days)
  • Detailed oriented to provide accurate and consistent work
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Work independently and as a team member
  • Knowledge of feedyard cattle processing programs including animal health and habits
  • Experience in managing employee labor, feeding, herd health, & BQA
  • General computer knowledge

Special Conditions / Requirements:
  • Operating computerized machinery
  • Livestock accidents, moving machinery, contaminated medical equipment, vehicular and livestock traffic

Working Conditions / Physical Requirements:
  • Heavy lifting, walking, long-term standing, climbing equipment
  • Constantly works in outdoor weather conditions
  • Must be able to lift 50+ pounds regularly

Moving machinery
Extreme weather conditions such as rain, sleet, snow, hair, heat, cold, wind, dust, etc.
