What is a cat kennel?

Cat kennels are specialized facilities or enclosures designed to house, care for, and sometimes board cats temporarily. They provide a safe, secure, and comfortable environment for cats when their owners are away or unable to care for them. Cat kennels often offer services such as feeding, cleaning, exercise, and sometimes grooming or medical attention. These facilities may be stand-alone businesses or part of larger pet boarding establishments.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a cat kennel attendant?

To thrive as a Cat Kennel Attendant, you need basic animal care knowledge, attention to hygiene, and physical stamina, usually supported by a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with cleaning supplies, feeding schedules, and sometimes animal management software is helpful. Patience, compassion, and strong observation skills set standout attendants apart. These qualities are important to ensure the well-being, safety, and comfort of cats in a kennel environment.

What are common challenges faced by cat kennel attendants and how can they be managed?

Cat kennel attendants often encounter challenges such as managing stress in cats during their stay, handling multiple animals with different temperaments, and maintaining strict sanitation protocols. Building trust with cats through calm and consistent handling, using enrichment activities, and closely following hygiene procedures are essential strategies. Additionally, effective communication with team members ensures that any health or behavioral concerns are addressed promptly, contributing to a safe and comfortable environment for both cats and staff.

Job description

Overview
Full-Time Kennel Attendant | Lexington, SC
When a client hands us their leash and walks out our door, they're trusting us with a member of the household. The person who earns that trust most directly is our Kennel Attendant: the one who notices who didn't finish breakfast, who needs a slower walk, and who just needs some company. That kind of attention can't be taught, but everything else about this job can be, and at Cherokee Trail Veterinary Hospital, we will.
About the Practice
Cherokee Trail Veterinary Hospital is an AAHA accredited, Fear Free, and Cat Friendly practice that has cared for the pets of Lexington since 1976, long enough that some of our clients grew up in our lobby and now bring their own kids and their own dogs. Our full-service hospital offers wellness care, surgery, rehabilitation, and advanced diagnostics, and the pets who board with us get the same attention as the patients in our exam rooms. If you're looking for a place to start a career in animal care, we'll help you build it.
What You'll Help Make Possible
  • Pets that settle in, eat well, and rest easy because someone paid attention to the details of their stay
  • A hospital that opens every morning clean, stocked, and ready before the first patient arrives
  • Daily care that happens on time, every time, so nothing about a pet's routine falls through the cracks
  • A calmer experience for nervous pets, from first walk to final pickup
  • The kind of stay that makes an owner say "he seems happier than when we dropped him off"

What We're Looking For
Required
  • Comfort working around dogs and cats

Preferred
  • Prior animal care, boarding, kennel, or veterinary experience
  • Interest in growing within animal care or veterinary medicine

No experience required. If you bring the patience and the work ethic, we'll bring the training.
Schedule
  • Full-time, day shifts
  • 9-hour shifts
  • Rotating weekends as part of the team schedule
  • Holidays included in the team rotation

Compensation
Compensation for this role starts at $14.50/hour, based on experience and role alignment.
Perks + Benefits
  • Competitive pay, based on experience
  • Medical, dental, vision, and life insurance
  • Free virtual mental healthcare for household (13+)
  • Generous CE allowance + paid CE time
  • Uniform allowance
  • Pet care discounts for your personal pets
  • PTO, floating holidays, parental leave, and military leave
  • A robust Employee Assistance Program (from finances to wellness and everything in between)
  • Access to Encore Vet Group's library of training, CE, and career development resources
  • A 401(k) with up to 5% company match

If you're looking for a place where your work matters and your team does too, we'd love to hear from you. Ready to Get Started? Apply today!
