Work EnvironmentSupervised clinical or community settings, training rolesIndependent practice, full clinical responsibilities
Employer & Industry UsageInternship programs, training sites, entry-level positionsEstablished agencies, outpatient clinics, hospitals

The main difference between a Casac Intern and a Casac is that the Intern is in training or completing certification requirements, while the Casac is a fully licensed professional authorized to provide independent substance abuse counseling. Interns gain supervised experience, whereas licensed Casacs operate independently in various treatment settings.

What are CASAC Interns?

CASAC Interns are individuals in the process of becoming Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselors (CASAC) in New York State. They have completed the required education and training, and are working under supervision to gain hands-on experience with clients. The intern status allows them to develop practical counseling skills and fulfill the clinical hours needed for full CASAC certification. During this period, they provide support and counseling to individuals struggling with substance use disorders, always under the guidance of a qualified professional.

What types of supervision and support can a CASAC Intern expect during their internship?

As a CASAC Intern, you can expect to work under the direct supervision of a credentialed substance abuse counselor or clinical supervisor. Regular supervision sessions are a key component of the internship, providing guidance on case management, counseling techniques, and ethical considerations. Most organizations encourage interns to participate in team meetings, shadow experienced counselors, and engage in ongoing training to enhance their skills. This collaborative environment helps interns gain practical experience while ensuring they have access to professional support when facing challenging cases.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a CASAC Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a CASAC Intern, you need foundational knowledge of substance abuse counseling principles, typically supported by enrollment in or completion of a Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC) training program. Familiarity with clinical documentation systems, group facilitation tools, and adherence to confidentiality guidelines is essential. Strong interpersonal skills, active listening, and cultural sensitivity help build trust and rapport with clients. These skills ensure effective support and recovery guidance for individuals struggling with addiction, while maintaining professional and ethical standards.
